Salmela was not re-signed by New Jersey and will play in Russia's KHL during the 2011-12 season.
Salmela returned to New Jersey as the throw-in in the Ilya Kovalchuk deal. He has some offensive potential but will miss most, if not all, of the 2010-11 season recovering from a torn ACL.
Salmela was brought in as a free agent to give the Devils a boost offensively on the blueline. Brian Rafalski was the last defenseman New Jersey signed as a free agent from Finland and he turned out pretty well. Salmela is a true wild card,as there's no way to know how he'll adapt to the NHL. If he makes some noise early, we could have another Rafalski on our hands, but his adaptation very well could take longer.
