Penner is an agile rearguard who, along with forward Mikko Lehtonen, was shipped to Minnesota (from Boston) last February in exchange for goalie Anton Khudobin. At 5-foot-10, 183 pounds, Penner does not have ideal size for a defenseman, but he possesses enough of a two-way game to be a serviceable depth defender for the Wild this season.
Penner is a smallish, mobile defenseman, who had a two-game cup of coffee with the B's in 2009-10. His ability in the transition game could help him carve out a role in the NHL, but his lack of ideal size (5-10, 183) for a pro blueliner could stall him at the AHl level.
Penner shows above-average mobility and has displayed ability in the transition game. That's similar to what we were saying about Matt Hunwick (also listed at 5-11, 190) not too long ago, so Penner could be one to watch down the road.
Penner is a small, mobile offensive-defenseman who will have to improve his defensive fundamentals in the minors to make an impact with the B's.
