Winchester missed last season after suffering an injury while playing in Finland during the lockout. His prior NHL stats don't suggest he would be a good fantasy pickup, even if he weren't coming off a major injury. He recorded just two goals and six assists in 32 games with his prior team, the Senators, in 2011-12.
Winchester is a solid if unspectacular fourth line center who is not looked upon to score points. Rather, he kills penalties and works the boards quite well, providing a strong defensive conscious for his line. The 27-year-old could be the odd man out though entering the 2011-12 season with the off-season signing of center Zenon Konopka who will play on the fourth line for Ottawa. Winchester will need to have a strong training camp in September as he'll be in tough to earn minutes this season.
Winchester spent the majority of the 2009-10 season centering Ottawa's 4th line and killing penalties. He has little offensive upside, but is a good grinder and faceoff man. He has little to no fantasy value.
Winchester is developing nicely into a 3rd or 4th line checker and penalty kill specialist who's also very good on the faceoff. He doesn't have a lot of offensive upside, but head coach Cory Clouston likes this kid and he should be able to stick with the big club again this year.
Winchester is going to be given every chance to succeed this year, his first full pro season, and is being highly touted by Sens' GM Bryan Murray. The 24-year-old center, who plays an intelligent and hard-working game, is going to be given a shot at a top-6 forward spot during training camp. While he'll likely spend most of this season playing center/winger on Ottawa's third and fourth line, the confidence in Winchester's game by the Sens' brass speaks volumes about his potential.
