The 28-year-old blueliner has probably seen his chance to carve out an NHL roster spot pass him by, and with just four assists in 32 games last season, Eckford would have to surprise everyone just to be considered to get a mid-season call.
The defenseman recorded seven goals and six assists in 53 games with AHL Binghamton last season, and with mediocre numbers like that, it looks like another season without cracking an NHL lineup is in line for Eckford.
Eckford split time between the Devils and their AHL affiliate in 2010-11. With AHL Albany, the blueliner tallied two goals, 10 assists, and a minus-8 rating through 37 games, while he didn't crack the stat sheet (save for a minus-1 rating) in four games at the NHL level. Expect the Coyotes to use him similarly; he'll provide defensive depth in the event of injury.
Eckford will begin the 2010 season in the AHL after playing in a handful of games for the Devils last season.
