Axelsson is currently playing in the Swedish Hockey League.
Axelsson has returned to Sweden for the 2010-11 campaign rather than playing in Grand Rapids (AHL). He could be back in the organization down the road, but it appears as though his maturity issues could road block him from becoming an NHL regular.
After a 2008-09 campaign in Sweden that was marred by injuries and a release from Djurgarden, the question is now: Is he going to be an enigma or a star? Axelsson's issues appear to tied to poor work ethic rather than a lack of talent, but if the Wings can't find ways to motivate him, he'll turn out as a "coulda been" and eventually disappear from their top prospect lists. Axelsson is expected to make his North American debut with Grand Rapids (AHL) this season, so perhaps being closer to the big club will help the light go on.
Axelsson is on loan to Djurgårdens IF of the Swedish Elite league for the 2008-09 campaign. His biggest flaws right now are maturity and strength, which the Wings hope will develop simultaneously as a professional in his home country before he's brought over to compete for a regular gig in Detroit.
Axelsson will spend another year in Sweden and won't join the Red Wings for at least another year.
