Geoffrion announced his retirement from pro hockey Monday, NHL.com's Dan Rosen reports.
ANALYSIS
A skull fracture and concussion from November is to blame for Geoffrion's early retirement, as the severe injury caused concerning lingering symptoms. If Geoffrion has played his last game, he finishes with 13 points at the NHL level and 64 in the AHL. He was a second-round pick in the 2006 draft and made his AHL debut in the 2009 playoffs.

Geoffrion scored just eight points (6G, 2A) in his rookie season with the Preds last year. He spent the first four months of the season in the AHL, but was recalled in February and stuck with the team right through to the end of the regular season and into the playoffs, where he added two assists in 12 games. Geoffrion certainly has the bloodlines and the raw scoring ability to make a big impact in the NHL someday, but for now, expect the Preds to continue to bring him along slowly.
The bloodlines are certainly there for the 2010 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner. He's Bernie (Boom Boom) Geoffrion's grandson and his great-grandfather, Howie Morenz, is also a Hockey Hall of Famer. His father, Danny, also played in the NHL. And in the case of Blake, it's just a matter of when, not if, the 2006 second-rounder becomes the next member of this distinguished hockey family to play in the league. He will challenge for a roster spot at the Preds' rookie camp in September, but in all likelihood will start the season back in the minors with the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals.
Geoffrion was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2006 NHL entry draft. The young forward showed tremendous improvement at the university of Wisconsin this psat season. Geoffrion scored 10 goals and 20 assists in 36 games during his sophomore campaign. He'll spend another year in Wisconsin this season and hopefully push the bar even higher.
The young forward is building an impressive hockey resume. He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2006 NHL entry draft. Geoffrion has been grooming his skills at the University of Wisconsin and with the Team USA world junior team. He will play another season in 2007-08 with the University of Wisconsin and continue building towards a promising future NHL career.
Drafted in the second round, 56th overall in the 2006 NHL entry draft, Geoffrion is a local boy who grew up playing in the Nashville Youth Hockey League. Geoffrion is a great, young talent but likely two seasons away from any NHL impact. He will likely play this season for the University of Wisconsin.
