McGrattan was a stabilizing veteran in a young locker room last season and picked up eight points and 100 penalty minutes in 76 games. With the youth movement on the rise in Calgary, McGrattan may see a drop in his playing time, but the Flames love his grit, drive and leadership. Watch his role coming out of camp before you consider him for your sin bin league.
McGrattan was rewarded for a solid 2012-13 season with a two-year contract extension in the offseason. He will provide grit and an enforcer's attitude to the Flames if he can hold off the youngsters for a spot on the fourth line. McGrattan picks up a lot of penalty minutes, but not much else, so his value is limited to those formats that reward sin bin points.
McGrattan will ply his pugilistic skills in Calgary this year. Keep in mind that he is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and he also missed significant time due to the NHL's substance abuse policy last year. All things considered he may still provide useful penalty minutes if he gets regular playing time, just don't expect much more.
In 2007-2008, McGrattan saw limited time with the Ottawa Senators and only played 38 games. If he does make the team, his services will be used on the checking line and protecting his teammates as he has very little offense skills. The only value he has will be in PIMs.
McGrattan will once again earn his keep as Ottawa's main enforcer when called upon. He won't see a lot of ice-time when he does play but he'll be good for a few penalty minutes.
McGrattan will once again be called upon to protect his fellow Senators so don't expect any large increases in his offensive totals. That being said, the big winger will once again post a high penalty minute total.
This pugilist could be handy to have in leagues that count PIMs, assuming you have a deep bench. Just play him against traditional rivals like Toronto, Boston, Buffalo, and Philadelphia.
