Sterling secured a professional tryout agreement with St. Louis on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Sterling is a known quantity for the Blues, having been part of their organization during the 2011-12 season. Since then, he has played abroad, most recently with Salzburg EC of the Austrian league. During his past two campaigns, the 32-year-old averaged more than a point per game, which no doubt put him back on the team's radar. There will be a lot of competition for those bottom-six roster spots, but Sterling's experience in Europe could give him the inside edge.

Sterling has been a prolific goal-scorer in the American Hockey League, having scored 55 goals as an AHL rookie in 2006-07 and standing with 171 goals and 145 assists in 319 career AHL games. All that offense, and just 26 games in the NHL. At 27, he's not considered a prospect any longer and will attempt to make his way back to the NHL while skating for AHL Peoria in 2011-12.
Sterling has played well for several seasons at the AHL level, but has failed in the NHL. This year the 26-year-old gets a chance to show his skills off with the likes of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Coach Dan Bylsma has said that Sterling will get a chance to play alongside the superstars. If he finds chemistry with one or both of the Pens's stars, then his fantasy value will rise accordingly. Watch him closely in camp, but don't reach for him because Pittsburgh has several other secondary scoring options worth consideration.
Sterling has played in just 13 NHL games in his career, but had 38 goals and 32 assists while playing with Chicago of the AHL last season. He has some upside after making the AHL All-Star Game last season. He won't get much playing time at first, but if he develops as the season progresses, he may get an opportunity.
Sterling had four solid seasons at Colorado College, but there was absolutely no reason to think he would dominate the AHL like he did in his first pro season. Sterling scored 55 goals and had 97 points in 77 AHL games last season. He played with solid players such as AHL MVP Darren Haydar and Jason Krog nearly all season long, but still deserves a ton of credit for the season he had. The former fifth-round pick in 2003 should get a long look at training camp this season. Sterling's biggest problem may be the fact that he is only 5-8 and 180 pounds; but regardless of his size, he is a player to keep a close eye on in the future.
He ranked fifth among all NCAA Division I players and led Colorado College with 55 points (31 goals, 24 assists) in 41 games last season where he was a finalist for the Hobey Baker award. He's listed at 5-foot-7, but by all accounts that's a stretch. He's remain in the Thrashers system for the upcoming season but likely won't make the big club due to his size.

Sterling, who was called up by the Blues over the weekend, is tied for the AHL scoring lead with 12 goals and tied for second with 22 points, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The Blues made the callup after they learned T.J. Oshie was suffering from a wrist injury that may keep him out of Tuesday's home game against Los Angeles.
