Tambellini signed a contract with Djurgardens IF of the Swedish Hockey League on Friday, TSN reports.
ANALYSIS
Tambellini spent four seasons in Europe before signing a one-year, two-way contract with the Lightning last summer. A first-round pick in 2003, Tambellini enjoyed a successful campaign with AHL Syracuse this past season, scoring 29 goals and setting up 20 more in 65 games, though the parent club did not end up utilizing him for a single game. Tambellini is 32 years old and it appears that his heart is set on playing overseas.

Tambellini was signed to a one-year by the Canucks this offseason to add depth to the team’s third and fourth lines. The 26-year-old forward has never topped more than 15 points in an NHL season and remains an option in only the deepest of leagues.
Tambellini played in 65 games for the Islanders in 2008-09 and mustered up a mere 15 points. He is in the final year of his contract, so if he cannot produce a strong campaign, the Islanders may opt to let him walk. Tamby just hasn't shown enough in any aspect of the game to keep him at the NHL level.
Tambellini continues to sizzle in the AHL (76 points in 57 games last year) but fizzle in the NHL (four points in 31 games). This will likely be a make-or-break year for Tamby as the team is expected to give him a real chance to show he belongs with the big club. If he fails to make an impact yet again, the Isles may grow weary.
Tambellini played quite a few games with the Islanders this past season, but he spent a lot of those games playing on the fourth line. It seems like Tambellini has been around for a while, but he just turned 23 years old. After losing both Ryan Smyth and Jason Blake in free agency, it's possible that Tambellini may get the chance to be a top six forward for the Islanders this season.
Tambellini had posted some decent numbers in AHL and college. While his knack for scoring and skating aren't in question, he needs to work on his defensive play in order to get a full time role.
Tambellini put up spectacular numbers last season in college at the University of Michigan. He needs at least a year to adjust to the pro game, and put on a little weight since he is undersized for a left wing. Tambellini would have to light up the preseason to even get considered for a fourth line spot. He's either going back to college for a year or playing in the AHL this season.
