Nilsson has signed to play in the KHL for the coming season, according to a report from overseas.
ANALYSIS
The former 15th overall pick (2003) put together a solid season in 2007-08 (10 goals, 31 assists, plus-8 in 71 games) but regressed significantly in 2008-09 (29 points) and 2009-10 (27 points). He may never return to the NHL.

Nilsson was the top name received by Edmonton in the Ryan Smyth deal in 2008. The light seemed to turn on for him in Edmonton and the Oilers looked like they were getting the kind of talent the Islanders saw when they drafted him in the first round of the 2003 draft. Alas last season he was another target of former Head Coach Craig MacTavish and rode the pine quite often, scoring only nine goals in 64 games. The addition of Mike Comrie only pushes him further down the depth chart at center.
Nilsson was finally able to display the talent that made him a first round draft pick, scoring 10 goals and adding 31 assists in 71 games last season for Edmonton. Even with these numbers Nilsson is nothing more than a number six wing in your draft.
Nilsson was part of a very nice package that Edmonton received from the Islanders in exchange for Ryan Smyth. Nilsson fell out of favor in New York and he never got a chance to play in the NHL for the Islanders this past season, but he can control the game when handling the puck and has the ability to become a force at the offensive end. He remains a very good prospect and should play in the NHL this season.
Nilsson is the top prospect in the Islanders' system, and he showed why by reeling off 13 points in the last 16 games of the season. While we wouldn't expect that type of pace this season, we do expect an increase in the 20 points he scored last season. The Islanders will give him every chance to be a success in this league.
Nilsson was one of the most highly regarded prospects in the 2003 Entry Draft. His stock has fallen a little, but he's still one of the top prospects in the Islander system. Terrific in all offensive aspects of the game, but needs to work on his defensive game/awareness. Not afraid to take or dish out checks. Has the talent to play on first or second lines in the NHL.
