Backman was released by the Panthers on Wednesday, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
ANALYSIS
Backman was a free agent invitee to camp, but couldn't beat out second-year pro Jay Garrison for the Panthers' eighth spot on the blue line. But he had a decent camp and could catch on elsewhere before too long.

Backman, a solid but unspectacular defenseman, has scored exactly 18 points in each of his four full NHL seasons, and he isn't likely to do any better in Columbus.
Backman has scored exactly 18 points the last three seasons in a row, so you know pretty much what you're getting with this guy. Contributing on offense is just not what he's out there for. Add to that his penchant for getting injured, all of which combine to make him an unattractive fantasy play.
Backman was limited to 52 games last season due to shoulder, foot and wrist injuries, but led St. Louis with an average of 24 minutes, 48 seconds of ice time per game. Backman scored six goals and added 12 assists for 18 points in the 52 games played. Providing he can stay healthy in 2006-2007, Backman should see an increase in points and an improved plus-minus (he was minus-15 last season) with the additions of Doug Weight, Jay McKee, Bill Guerin, Martin Rucinsky, and Manny Legace to the Blues' lineup.
Backman will put up 20+ points and 20 PIM, being a part of the second defensive unit. With the departure of two of the best offensive defense threats to ever play the game -- Al McIinnis (retirement) and Chris Pronger (signed with Edmonton) -- Backman will need to step up his offensive game. Backman was able to learn from the two for two years, and will do his part to help fill the void.
