Komisarek signed a one-year, $700,000 contract with Carolina in July just weeks after being bought out by the Maple Leafs. The 31-year-old Komisarek only appeared in four games for the Leafs last season and never lived up to the five-year, $22.5 million contract they signed him to back in 2009. He'll no doubt benefit from a change of scenery with the Canes but it's important to keep in mind he has never scored more than 15 points in a single campaign, and even that was seven seasons ago. He will play primarily in a shutdown role and will provide little by way of fantasy value in most formats.
Isn't his contract done yet? Komisarek has been a disappointment, to say the least, in Toronto and things don't look much better for him heading into 2012-13. His only hope? Coach Randy Carlyle likes a physical game and that's the one thing Komisarek can actually deliver. Don't count on anything other than hits from the Long Island native.
Will Komisarek get the Finger treatment? As in Jeff Finger, that is? We highly doubt that this slow-footed, way overpaid, Burkie fave will ever find himself demoted to the AHL. We keep hearing Burkie’s lips moving over the summer, saying Komisarek is looking great. Right. He’s the oldest 29-year-old defender we think we’ve ever seen. And unless he significantly alters his approach, his fantasy value will be even worse than it was last season when he stiffed at his best category -- PIMs. He will still deliver some hits and blocked shots, but the Leafs’ blue line improved without him this summer; he’s going to be hard-pressed to impress.
We're torn on Komisarek. Sure, he personifies truculence, Brian Burke's favorite hockey trait. But is he anything more than a stay-at-home defender who gives you 20 points and 120 PIMs. The Leafs are praying that he recovers emotionally from the flogging Milan Lucic laid on him last season -- you know, the one where Komisarek busted his hand. He wasn't the same after that fight; he really wasn't. And he'd better have shaken that funk or the Leafs' faithful will eat him for a mid-period snack. All that said, his only value lies in PIM leagues. Do not fall for the Brian Burke hype.
The Komisar is the shut-down defenseman for Montreal but he rarely makes any forays into the enemy zone and let's his partner Andrei Markov make those incursions. Komisarek has no fantasy value.
Komisarek is an emerging stay-at-home defenseman who plays on the top defensive pairing with Andrei Markov. Komisarek doesn't score enough to merit fantasy consideration however.
Komisarek will make this team, mainly because they need his huge size and his awesome potential. The Canadiens are a little thin on defense, but won’t be if he can step up and be the Scott Stevens-type player that everyone thinks he can be. The young American only got in 20 games with the farm team in ’04-’05, but the organization was happy with his play. He’ll not be a top fantasy player this season on the blue line, but he could pop in 10 goals if things go right.
