Sopel announced his retirement from professional hockey Friday, Tracey Myers of CSN Chicago reports.
ANALYSIS
Sopel last appeared in the NHL with the Canadiens in 2010-11. He had bounced around the KHL the previous three seasons before returning stateside this year, appearing in 29 games for AHL Chicago of the Blues organization. While his career had bottomed out during this decade, Sopel put together some quality seasons with the Canucks in the mid-2000s, registering a career-high 42 points in 2003-04. In addition to his stints with the Canucks and Canadiens, Sopel also spent time with the Islanders, Kings, Blackhawks, and Thrashers.

Even though Sopel was able to play more than 70 games for the first time in 5 years last season, his name only saw the score-sheet a total of 8 times last season. He is a solid stay at home blueliner who will bring some grit to the Thrashers and championship experience after winning the 2010 Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks. Aside from that however don’t count on Sopel for any fantasy value as he is not a high end offensive defenseman to say the least.
Sopel missed the last 51 regular season games and the playoffs because of an elbow surgery. The 32-year-old could make a big move this season as another one of the Hawks' top defensemen.
Sopel is likely to be a top four blueliner for the Blackhawks and is in the running to earn top paring with Brian Campbell. He notched 20 points (one goal, 19 helpers) last season and could easily top those totals playing alongside Campbell.
Sopel signed with the Hawks after turning down the Red Wings to get more playing time. He is considered one of the top four defensemen on the Hawks.
He is coming back from knee surgery, and will be looking to return to his pre-injury form. Sopel will be with the Kings all season long unless he is traded or goes down with an injury. He gives them a nice presence on the blue line, but not much offense
Sopel is coming off a career high season in goals (10), assists (32), and points (42) playing for Vancouver in 2003-04. His point totals were good enough to place him in the top 20 in defensemen scoring. While we are a tad hesitant about his being able to hit near the 45 point plateau this year, 35 points is definitely attainable.
