Allen was assigned to AHL Hamilton on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The assignment doesn't come as much of a surprise after Allen cleared waivers. The veteran defenseman has suited up for just five games with the Canadiens since being acquired Nov. 20, and hasn't played since being activated from injured reserve Dec. 23.

Allen has just a single goal in his last 210 games and hasn’t crested 20 points since 2006-07. Do you need any more information than that?
Allen is a sturdy, stay-at-home defender whose greatest value lies in his ability to keep shooters away from his net. He once delivered 25 points in a season, but that was in 2006-07. If your league counts blocked shots, Allen can shoot you right up the charts -- last season, he clocked 188 pucks and we could see 200 in his future.
Allen fits the mold of a top-four defenseman capable of handling around 20 minutes of ice time per game. He combined for 17 points (4 G, 13 A) and 82 penalty minutes between the Panthers and Hurricanes in 2010-11. None of this makes him a must-have in the fantasy realm, yet he can be a serviceable option for owners in categorical formats where PIMs count.
Allen's 2008-09 campaign was almost completely lost due to injury, but he stayed in good enough shape to lead Florida in penalty minutes last season with 99. Health permitting, he should once again be a great source of PIMs, hits and blocks for the 2010-11 season.
Allen only got in two games before a knee injury derailed his 2008-09 campaign, but the Panthers still believe he's a top-four blueliner. Unfortunately for the fantasy world, he's never posted more than 25 points in an NHL season — and there's no reason to believe he'll do any better this season.
Allen plays more than 20 minutes in any given game, but he doesn't have any real fantasy value. His point total shrank to just 16 last season with virtually no power play contributions. Expect more of the same in 08-09.
Allen has never been a points guy, which is highlighted nicely by his career-high 25 points last season. The Panthers will continue to lean on Allen as stalwart, but will look to other blueliners for points. Don't expect Allen to explode, thus his fantasy value is minimal.
Easily the most overlooked part of the vaunted trade involving Roberto Luongo, Allen figures to step in and quietly fill a void in the team's Top 4 on the blue line. But as far as fantasy value is concerned, Allen has little value - the 26-year-old had a career-high 17 points last season.
Allen has the potential to be an impact player defensively. Has good size and strength to go along with decent passing skills. Is severely lacking in offensive ability, so don't expect him show up in the stat sheets to often.
