Frozen Fantasy: Dynamic Duos

Frozen Fantasy: Dynamic Duos

This article is part of our Frozen Fantasy series.

The Lightning raised jersey 26 into the rafters a week ago and it got me to thinking about dynamic duos. Who are the new Batman and Robin?

Or better yet, Batman and Superman.

Marty St. Louis and Vinny Lecavalier were a wicked pair (ditto St. Louis and Stammer). Before them, Eric Lindros and John LeClair's chemistry was flat-out frightening. Ditto Hull and Oates. And Super Mario and Jaromir Jagr.

Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin's time in the NHL will soon come to an end. Whether you like the Orcas or not, you've enjoyed their brilliance. Admit it. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are incredible pillars for the Pens, even though they don't play together.

And NO ONE will EVER touch Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri. #SizzleAndSteak

Today's NHL has some fantastic and well-established combos. Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf, Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek, and Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn. And let's not forget Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews (or should I say, Toews and Marian Hossa, and Kane and Artemi Panarin).

Or Alexander Ovechkin and Niklas Backstrom.

Can Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau resurrect (and sustain) their brilliance from last season? Is there a chance that Mikko Rantanen can become Goose for Nathan MacKinnon's Maverick? The Avs sure hope so.

Connor McDavid already has Leon Draisaitl (unless the Oil move the big man back to center). Mark Scheifele has Patrik Laine. And I'm just waiting for the day that the Leafs

Be still my beating heart.

I sure hope the Sabres find someone for Jack Eichel and that some day – maybe soon – that the Isles get rid of Garth Snow and give John Tavares a consistent wingman (no offense to Anders Lee or Josh Bailey below).

Who are your favorite duos? And are you lucky enough to own them on your fantasy squads?

I do. At least a few of them. And they're #untouchable.

Now, let's look at who caught my eye this week.

Dustin Brown, LW/RW, Los Angeles (9 percent Yahoo! owned) -
Just when we all thought Brown's career was in the dumpster, he snapped into shape and delivered six points, including two goals, in his last five games. Brown is the third wheel on the Jeff Carter-Tanner Pearson line and there's real value in that assignment. He needs to be owned in far more than one-in-10 leagues, at least right now.

Josh Bailey, LW/RW, NY Islanders (8 percent) -
Bailey is John Tavares' Connor Sheary. If that's not enough for you, then consider he has delivered five points (four assists) in his last four games heading into the weekend. Like Anders Lee below, Bailey will undoubtedly respond to the firing of Jack Capuano – he knows the Isles suckage this season isn't just about the coach and that more changes are on the way. That's enough to light a fire under the Isles' best and Bailey and his first-line mates could go on a nice run.

Brett Connolly, LW/RW, Washington (0 percent) -
Connolly has undeniable offensive talent, but his career pretty much shriveled on the proverbial vine after earning a full-time gig in Tampa as a teen. He held his own, but rather than becoming a delicious ice wine, Connolly's game turned moldy and he was designated to the cursed boxed wine category. He has shuffled from Tampa Bay to Boston and now to DC, and his game is still hanging by a thread. But Connolly's hands are elite and they've delivered four goals in his last six games. He's cheap and easy, and might have a couple more goals in that twig. Take a chance and then drop his moldy butt.

Jared Coreau, G, Detroit (11 percent) -
KEEPER ALERT! KEEPER ALERT! I've mentioned him before, so I will not spend much time here. Especially after the Bruins handed him his jock the other night. But consider this for a second. The Wings' goalies have been mediocre this season and there's an expansion draft coming up. Coreau is huge, something the Wings haven't had in years. They might expose both Petr Mrazek and Jimmy Howard in that draft, and protect this 6-foot-6 behemoth. You've been warned.

Trevor Daley, D, Pittsburgh (10 percent) -
This one is simple. Kris Letang is week-to-week and Daley is getting his minutes. Daley has four points in his last three games and is getting second-unit power-play time. #NoBrainer, at least from where I sit.

Lars Eller, C, Washington (1 percent) -
Eller has never lived up to the original hype, but the guy does have skills. And his three goals, three assists and plus-8 in five games heading into the weekend are numbers I want (at least temporarily) helping my team. Eller is available – before going on this rip, he had seven points and a minus-1 rating in his first 39 games. He's under the radar as a result.

Marian Gaborik, LW/RW, Los Angeles (7 percent) -
Gaborik is back from the infirmary and he's already starting to produce. He has three goals and two assists in the five games heading into the weekend and he's spending time with Anze Kopitar. There was a time when Gaborik was the next great star, but injuries have been his kryptonite. Still, the sniper had 41 goals four seasons ago and 27 in 69 games just two years back. I'm buying, if only to block another owner. But I don't think he's going to be wasting away on my bench.

Anders Lee, LW, NY Islanders (13 percent) -
A coaching change can light a fire under a team, particularly when they all know that the coach wasn't the problem. Lee has a three-game, four-point streak on the go and the best the Isles have to ride shotgun with John Tavares. He's already on a near-30 goal pace and interim coach Doug Weight knows offense. I'm willing to roll the dice. You? Hey – he might even blossom now. He has the skills.

Brock McGinn, LW/RW, Carolina (2 percent) -
McGinn was a big-time scorer in junior who quickly discovered his perfect fit in the NHL – as an irritating third-line torpedo who hits you, takes the puck and then finds the net. McGinn had three goals and three assists in three games prior to Tuesday's smack down at the hands of the Jackets. Friday brought an even bigger embarrassment at the wings of the Pens. But McGinn, Jordan Staal and Elias Lindholm make an impressive trio. Take a look.

Lee Stempniak, LW/RW, Carolina (10 percent) -
Stempy is back on my list, just like every other year in the last five or six. He's not sexy enough to draft (he'd only disappoint you if you did). But Stempniak can still deliver points in spurts and that's what he did this week. He had five points, including four helpers, in the five games prior to Friday's trampling at the webbed hooves of those Pennsylvanian birds. And remember – last season, Stempy had 51 points between Jersey and the Hub of Hockey. #SleeperValue

Back to duos.

Stanley Cups seem to be carried by duos. Penguins. Blackhawks. Ducks. Kings (Kopitar/Carter). Bruins (Krejci/Marchand; Bergeron/Horton). Red Wings (Datsyuk/Zetterberg). Carolina (Staal/Williams).

And that's EVERY winner since the lockout.

Does that mean the Jets, Leafs or Oil are soon headed for a Cup? Yes, in a few years.

Oh Canada!

Until next week.
