Scores T4 finish in Japan
October 22, 2023
Ishikawa closed with a three-under 67 in the final round of the ZOZO Championship to finish in a share of fourth place.
ANALYSIS
Ishikawa had a busy scorecard on Sunday with eight birdies against three bogeys and a double. His 20 birdies for the week were the second-most in the field. Ishikawa has played in his fair share of PGA Tour events of the years, but now plays primarily on the Japanese Tour. With this finish he will earn an exemption into the World Wide Technology Championship.

Ryo Ishikawa was Hideki Matsuyama before Hideki Matsuyama was Hideki Matsuyama, with one major difference. Matsuyama embraced the pressure and upped his game while Ishikawa crumbled under the spotlight. With that spotlight long forgotten, Ishikawa is finally starting to play some solid golf once again. He's still young enough to be on the upswing in his career, so his ceiling should be much higher than what he showed last year. The problem is, he hasn't shown the consistency yet, so even at this price he's a bit of a risky proposition. In draft leagues he should go in the 7th or 8th round.
Ishikawa joined Web.com tour mid-season last year and made the most of his short time on tour with four top-10s in just 10 starts. He even picked up a win in mid-August.
Ishikawa has largely failed to live up to the hype attached to him as a teenager, but that's not necessarily his fault. Expectations were very high from the start and some golfers simply don't handle that well. Ishikawa has had his moments, but it's about time he steps up. This could be the year as he'll have plenty of opportunities as a full-time member on the PGA TOUR in 2013.
Looking back, things may have happened a little too quickly for Ishikawa. When he first came upon the scene, he was only 17 years old and maybe too young to take it all in. A few years later it looks like Ryo is finding some balance and with that, his play should improve. His best showing last year came at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational where he finished T4. That showing is probably a sign of things to come. However, Ishikawa finished the year in 51st place in the official world golf rankings and lost his spot in the Masters and some WGC events. He could earn it back with a strong start to the season, but that makes a difficult option in PGA Tour-based leagues.
Ishikawa has yet to take off like most expected, but don't forget, he's only 19-years-old and his No. 36 world ranking will gain him entry to all the big events this season. However, he decided not to join the PGA Tour and will still primarily play in Japan.
Ishikawa is a wildcard in 2010. Perhaps the most hyped player since Tiger Woods, this kid can play. Don't expect a meteoric rise in Ishikawa's numbers this season, but it will not take much to top his 2009 numbers. Ishikawa certainly has the talent to have a big season, but there are still questions about the number of events he will play in. Time will tell, but 2011 is the better bet for Ishikawa's breakout year. Ishikawa moved from 60th to 30th in the 2009 final Official World Golf Rankings.
The "Shy Prince" is a rising star at age 17 on the Japan pro tour. He won an event on the Japan Golf Tour at age 15 to become the youngest winner of a professional event used in the Official World Golf Rankings. He's a name to watch if he starts playing more in the U.S. or Europe as a result. Presidents Cup Captain Greg Norman selected Ishikawa as Captain's choice to be added to the 2009 team roster.
