Fred Couples

Couples has made a habit of competing only at certain events each year. The Masters is a good example. He still has enough game to compete at the highest level, but he can't do it every week. That said, Couples is a good waiver-wire player to look for during certain weeks, but not a good player to count on for the entire season.

Couples had a nice bounce-back season in 2005. His year, however, might not have been as good as you thought. Couples chose his spots well finishing second at the Memorial tournament and third at the British Open. He also played in a few more events than normal. His back held up last year, which was not always the case previously. At this price, Couples is not a good pick for 2006. Two reasons: 1) his health is always going to be an issue, and 2) last year's earnings were from 22 events. I would be surprised if he played that often this year.

Couples had a nice comeback in 2003, but we don't think you can expect the same this year. Age will creep in a little more, plus the fact that he just doesn't play that much will lead to a big drop-off. He might be worth a very end spot on your team bench.
