Added to field for Puerto Rico Open
March 4, 2024
Ernst is in the field for the Puerto Rico Open, according to Rob Bolton of PGATour.com.
ANALYSIS
Greg Chalmers had to withdraw from the Puerto Rico Open, leaving a vacant spot for Ernst to enter the field. Ernst will be making his first start since November's Butterfield Bermuda Championship, but he hasn't made a cut on the PGA Tour since the 2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta where he placed T60.

Perhaps the urgency was missing last season. Perhaps Ernst lost his focus or maybe he's just not as good as we first thought? Na, this kid tore it up as a rookie in 2013, not only finishing inside the top-100 on the money list, but also picking up his first career win on the PGA Tour. With that win he became exempt for the 2014 and 2015 seasons, so the urgency to play well last year was absent. It sounds silly, but hey, the kid in only 24, who knows how his mind works.
Ernst hit pay-dirt in early May last year when he won the Wells Fargo Championship. That's the good news, the bad news is that he earned less than $100k outside that one week. It's certainly promising that Ernst was able to get a victory last season, but it's also troubling that he was unable to get anything done outside that victory. It's not uncommon to struggle after a big win and although Ernst will probably play better this year than he did after his win last year, it's probably not enough to justify a pick in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues he should go in the 80-90 range.
Ersnt was one of four players to make it through all four stages of PGA TOUR Q-School: Pre-qualifying, first stage, second stage and final stage. That is impressive stuff under the most heightened of pressures. While Ernst backed up a little bit on the sixth and final day, he did shoot a 66-67 combination in the fourth and fifth rounds, which gave him some breathing room for Monday’s final round. Fantasy players should see how Ernst reacts to his first few starts on the PGA TOUR before deciding if he’s for real and should be a member of your team.
