Summerhays' track record of six consecutive years of earnings increases finally ended in 2016-17 as he failed to top $1 million for the first time since his rookie year in 2011. The reason was just one top-10 finish to his name as his Strokes Gained: Putting diminished from top-6 the previous two years to just 62nd in 2016-17. Still, there are plenty of reasons to suggest last season was an aberration, and this year represents strong bounceback potential for the Utah native.
Summerhays has six years in on the PGA Tour and he's improved his earnings every season. Considering he came in at just over $2 million last year, that's both good and bad. Good because, well, it's always good to improve, but bad because the increments have been pretty small -- relatively. All of which means he's a poor salary cap selection this year, but a solid and reliable draft pick. Summerhays should land somewhere between the fifth and sixth rounds.
Summerhays has steadily climbed the ranks of the PGA Tour since his sophomore season in 2012. While he is showing improvement, it's a slow and steady process for Summerhays. He earned just over $1.1 million in 2012, just under $1.3 million the following season and just over $1.5 million last year. At this rate, he'll end up around $1.7 million this year. Actually, it would be quite strange if he were to move up just another $200k again this season, but you get the point. There doesn't seem to be a huge jump on the horizon and that's exactly what you need when you place someone on a salary cap roster. In draft leagues he'll prove to be a steady source of income and should be taken around the 7th or 8th rounds.
Summerhays parlayed a strong July into a trip to the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs where he earned two additional top-25s last year. Summerhays is off to a pretty good start in the 2013-2014 portion of the season with four made-cuts in five tries. He's also earned a top-10 already. Summerhays just might have enough upside to warrant a salary cap selection this season, but it will be somewhat of a gamble. In draft leagues he should go in the 60-70 range.
Summerhays was really hit or miss in 2012, making the cut 15 times and missing the weekend 11 times. On the weekend, Summerhays played pretty well. He earned four top-10s, including three top-5s. Most impressive was that Summerhays did some of his best work against stiff competition, including the field at The Memorial. Summerhays has a solid upside and at his price is worth a shot in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues, he's a ninth-round pick.
