Champ has suffered through two seasons of tepid results, although he did finish the year with five consecutive made cuts, including a ninth-place finish at the Sanderson Farms Championship, a tournament he won back in 2019. Champ has historically been long and straight off the tee., but the flat stick continues to betray him. He finished the year ranked 165th in SG: Putting.
Champ may still be one of the longest hitters on Tour, but he played one of the shorter schedules of the season amongst his peers. As such, he ranks rather highly in terms of earnings-per-event, so it would be interesting to see where he’d sit on the money list if he played more tournaments. Two of the 27-year-old’s final three finishes of 2022 were top 20s. Only time will tell if he is able to carry that momentum into next season.
Champ is a bit of a maddening player. You can obviously see the extreme talent. He has the most natural length and speed in the game today, but his short game and putting leave plenty to be desired. This was his third season on tour and he has won in all of them. However, he may not have made the playoffs in 2020-21 had it not been for his victory at the 3M Open. Champ needs to be more consistent like he was in 2019-20 that led him to missing a lot less cuts and reaching the Tour Championship.
Second season on Tour, second season with a win the fall. In 2019-20 he got it done at the Safeway Open which will get him into the Masters in November. Bryson DeChambeau barely nipped Champ this season in driving distance and SG: Off-the-tee, but both are in their own category of length. Champ's game got better as the season went on, but control with the irons should still be his top priority heading into next season.
It didn't take Champ long to make his mark on the PGA Tour, but when the calendar turned to 2019, he all but disappeared. Champ won the Sanderson Farms Championship in October of 2018, and he also carded two additional top-10s before the end of the year, but 2019 was a disaster. Champ failed to post a single top-10 in 2019 and was only able to finish inside the top-25 twice. There is a bright side to all of this however. First, one of those top-25s from 2019 came in his final start, at the Northern Trust. Second, even with a win on his resume, his price is still reasonable heading into this season.
The 23-year-old out of Texas A&M burst onto the scene in 2017 at the U.S. Open, when he finished the first two days in a tie for eighth before ultimately posting a T32 in his major championship debut. His 2018 Web.com Tour campaign was highlighted by a win at the Utah Championship top-25s in half of his 20 starts. Champ missed just four cuts while ranking sixth in birdie average, fourth in GIR percentage and first in driving distance. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him in the running for Rookie of the Year honors on the PGA Tour in 2019.
