Rehabbing from back surgery
Back
February 18, 2020
Hurley underwent microdiscectomy surgery Nov. 4 to address a herniated disc in his back and has yet to return to competition, Bill Wagner of the Capital Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Hurley made eight cuts during his seventh year on the PGA Tour in 2019, but he battled lingering discomfort for much of the summer before heading in for surgery. The 37-year-old was cleared to resume physical therapy in late November and has gradually increased his intensity in workouts over the months that followed, but he admits that he's still a long way from swinging a club again. Hurley is tentatively targeting a return to competitive golf in January 2021.

The former Naval officer broke through for a win in 2016 at the Quicken Loans National, but unfortunately took a few steps back in finishing 135th in the FedEx Cup this past season. His lone triumph has secured his card for this season, so perhaps he can contend again and prove his win wasn't a fluke. Hurley's driving is short and crooked – not unlike Luke Donald – but he makes up for it with a strong iron game and putter. Though there isn't much to get excited about with Hurley's game, he should be motivated enough to play well with looming uncertainty regarding his PGA Tour status next year.
Hurley III was a rare example of a golfer that was fairly well known, even though he hadn't accomplished much on the golf course. He first hit the radar with a solid showing at the AT&T National in 2012, which has strong ties with the military and Hurley III being a former member of the Navy, it all made for a good story. A few years later, he made headlines when his father went missing and Hurley III made a plea for help. Last season however, Hurley III finally made headlines for his play on the course when he picked-up a win at the Quicken Loans National. With that win, Hurley III finally has some security and no longer has to worry about his card for next season. Will that improve his play? Probably, but at his current price, he's not worth the risk in salary cap formats. In drafts, he's a 7th-round pick.
Poor Billy Hurley III, if not for his affiliation with the Naval Academy, he might have pulled out a win last year over the 4th of July weekend. For those that don't recall, Hurley III held the 54-hole lead at the Greenbrier Classic and the attention was probably just too much to handle. Young players generally struggle in that spot, but add the timing of being a former military man on 4th of July weekend and boom, media circus. Hurley went on to card a top-5, his second of the year, but all anyone could talk about was what could have been. Hurley III has a bright future though and he's worth a look in salary cap leagues this year. In drafts he looks to be a 10th round pick.
Hurley missed nine of 15 Web.com cuts last season but posted seven Top-25s.
There's not much to Hurley on the course. He had a handful of Top-10s last season on the Nationwide Tour and barely snuck into the Top 25. His prospects for this season don't look great.
