Andres Romero

Romero raised the bar a while back when he nearly won the British Open and although he's had a decent run on the PGA Tour, he hasn't quite lived up to expectations. Last year he made most of his money in Reno and Puerto Rice, which is never a good sign. The upside is still there, but Romero remains a risky proposition. In draft leagues he should go in the 100-110 range.

Although Romero nearly pulled in $1 million in earnings last year, he missed more cuts than he made. That gives you an idea of how incredibly inconsistent he is. Among the bright spots last season was a runner-up finish at The Memorial and a third-place finish at the Reno-Tahoe Open. Romero has loads of talent, enough to crush his number from last year, but he's never shown the ability to perform consistently. Until he does, he's probably not worth a look in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues, he's worth a selection late.

You have to wonder how different life would be for Romero if only he'd found a way to win the 2007 Open Championship. For those who don't recall, Romero was in good position to capture the title late in the final round, but one errant shot ended his hopes. The following season Romero joined the PGA Tour, and he started quickly with a win in his first season. He's yet to duplicate that feat, however, leaving us asking if he's untapped potential or past his peak. Only 30, Romero has some good golf in front of him. The early-30s are usually a golfers best years as the mix of physical and mental strength peak. Romero should break out one of these years and is probably worth the risk this year.

Just a few years ago it seemed like Romero was the next big thing. He came very close to winning the British Open in 2007 and followed that with a victory during his first season on the PGA TOUR in 2008. Since the 2008 season, though, Romero hasn't looked like the kid who just missed at the British Open. Perhaps complacency set in after his win in 2008, because the following season was his worst on the PGA TOUR. He played well enough last season to secure his 2011 card, but playing well enough is not what was expected from Romero. The talent is certainly there, but is the drive? We'll find out soon enough as his status on the PGA TOUR is now a year-to-year situation. Romero is long, but wild off the tee, and he doesn't hit many greens. When he's on, like in 2007 and 2008, his putting is dependable.

Romero seems a little low in the rankings considering he made over $2 million in 2008, but the majority of his winnings that season came from winning his first career tournament. While Romero isn't a must-own player, he's a good value pick with a high upside.

Romero has a load of talent and is very young, but you have to wonder about his commitment to the PGA Tour. Romero did play 20 times on the PGA Tour last season, which he will have to replicate this season in order to improve upon his 2008 earnings number.
