The Jets placed Smith (neck) on injured reserve Saturday, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith suffered a neck injury in Week 10 against the Cardinals, and he has missed the Jets' last two games as a result. He'll be forced to miss the next four games and is eligible to return for Week 17 against the Bills, though Rich Cimini of ESPN.com posits that Smith is likely done for the rest of the 2024 regular season. Smith signed a one-year contract with the Jets in March after spending the first 13 years of his career with the Cowboys, who selected him in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

The 32-year-old has made eight Pro Bowls in his career, but Smith has played only 17 games total over the last three seasons and hasn't been able to stay healthy enough to handle a full schedule since 2015. When he's on the field though, he remains a stalwart left tackle for Dak Prescott.
The seven-time Pro Bowler played only two games last season due to a neck injury, and he hasn't played a full 16-game slate since 2015. Smith remains a key part of the Cowboys' offensive line and a beast at left tackle when he's 100 percent, but his inability to stay healthy could mean the clock is ticking on his tenure in Dallas.
Smith will start at left tackle for the Cowboys after his second consecutive Pro Bowl season
Young starting left tackle is coming off his first Pro Bowl selection, and should be a pillar of the Cowboys' offensive line for many years.
Young stud left tackle had some growing pains in 2012 and got flagged for 11 penalties, but didn't allow a sack in the entire second half. Smith will continue to provide excellent protection for Tony Romo's blind side for the foreseeable future.
2011 first round pick lived up to his billing as a rookie and will move over to left tackle this season. Tony Romo's new best friend still has some learning to do, but Smith has the upside to be a force on the Cowboys' offensive line for a long, long time.
The Cowboys' first round pick gets immediately plugged in at right tackle, and should be an improvement over Marc Colombo. The running game especially should notice the difference, with the far more mobile Smith pulling off the line and blocking downfield.

Contemplating retirement
OTNew York Jets
January 6, 2025
Smith has yet to decide whether he wants to keep playing in 2025, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports. "I've got to make a lot of decisions going forward. Within the next couple weeks, I have to decide what I'm going to do as far as playing or not playing," the veteran left tackle said Monday.
ANALYSIS
The 34-year-old's first season with the Jets was much like his last few with the Cowboys, as Smith had trouble staying on the field. He suited up for only 10 games in 2024, ending the season on IR due to neck trouble. Smith says he's feeling healthy now, but the pending free agent might decide to start the clock on his seemingly certain Hall of Fame induction rather than seek another contract, whether it's with the Jets or another club.
