Considering Copper's best statistical season over his 10-year career is 23 catches for 385 yards and three touchdowns, he is not someone worth considering in fantasy drafts this summer.
Entering his fourth season with the Chiefs, Copper's position on the 53-man roster as the team's final wideout is in serious jeopardy. He has produced just 30 receptions in three years as he is primarily used on special teams. And though he is a standout in that area, he will be pushed strongly by rookies Junior Hemingway and Josh Bellamy for the final receiver spot.
Copper is competing for a spot on the roster as the Chiefs' No. 5 or No. 6 receiver, if they elect to keep that many. His key to making the team will be his special teams play, so it's safe to leave him off the fantasy radar for now.
Copper had just four catches for 68 yards in 2009, even with the Chiefs scrambling for receiving help for much of the season. His primary value came on special teams, where he was one of the team's top contributors. But until fantasy leagues start awarding points for special teams blocks and tackles, Copper should be avoided.
Copper had a promising year in New Orleans in 2006, but his impact has trailed off considerably since then. He did not catch a pass with the Saints or Ravens last season, and he’ll fight for a low-end spot on the Chiefs’ depth chart in training camp.
Copper was a fantasy bust in 2007. After being pegged by many as a sleeper and competing for the team's No. 2 receiver slot during training camp, Copper ended up as the team's No. 4 wideout, catching just 15 passes last season. Copper's value on special teams means he is likely assured a spot on the roster, but with the healthy return of Robert Meachem and the addition of Adrian Arrington in this year's draft, don't expect Copper to improve much on last year's diminutive statistics.
With starting wideouts Joe Horn and Marques Colston battling injuries during the second half of 2006, Copper took advantage of an increased role in the offense toward the end of the season. After catching just four passes for 66 yards and no touchdowns in the first half of the year, Copper managed 19 catches for 319 yards and three scores in the second half. The departure of Joe Horn this offseason could open the door for Copper, but he will have to compete with Devery Henderson and first-round draft pick Robert Meachem for playing time. Those three wideouts will battle for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Marques Colston during training camp, and whoever emerges as the starter should put up big numbers in the Saints' high-powered offense. That being said, Copper currently projects as the team's No. 3 or 4 wideout heading into the 2007 season, which means it's unlikey he'll improve much on his 2006 totals of 23 catches, 385 yards, and three touchdowns.
Copper's at the bottom of the WR depth chart in Dallas, and will need injuries above him to get a major role in the offense.
