The Jaguars placed Smith (personal) on their reserve/retired list Wednesday, John Reid of The Florida Times-Union reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith announced in May that he won't play football in 2019, instead taking some time away from the game to focus on his health and personal life. He still has the option to return at any time, but there hasn't been any suggestion he'll change his mind. Jake Ryan (knee) and Quincy Williams are the top candidates to replace Smith atop the depth chart at weak-side linebacker.

Smith is profoundly undersized at 215 pounds, but his plus athleticism and unmatched instincts allow him to take down ballcarriers before blockers can even get their hands near him. Smith's prescience sometimes makes it appear as if the other 10 defenders are lagging in the video feed, but he's just that sharp. He'd probably be even more productive if he didn't have so much competition for tackles on the Jaguars defense, but he's also a standout blitz and turnover threat. That he hovers around 120 tackles per year is nothing to complain about, either.
Smith's 2016 season wasn't quite as productive as was hoped, but he remains solidly on the list of potentially elite IDP candidates this year. While his tackle rate dropped last year (119 tackles in 1,048 snaps), his previous two years (232 in 1,703) gives hope for a bounce back. Smith is one of the league's most instinctive and athletic linebackers, making him a threat to post standout sack and interception production in addition to his high tackle ceiling. Heading into his age-26 season, Smith is poised to breeze past 100 tackles for the fourth consecutive year.
Smith remains undersized at 6-foot-3, 223 pounds, but his truly rare instincts and athleticism have allowed him to produce as a top IDP in his first two seasons. He exceeded 100 tackles as a part-time player his rookie year, and after stepping into a full-time role in 2015 he pushed for a pace of nearly 10 tackles per game. After finishing 2015 with 128 tackles (99 solo) in 998 snaps, there's further room for growth as he could approach 1,100 snaps. The addition of second-round pick Myles Jack should be more of a concern for Paul Posluszny than for Smith.
Smith likely will be undervalued in drafts this year, but he could make a big IDP impact. Smith passed triple-digit tackles last year in just 705 snaps as a rookie, while replacing the injured Paul Posluszny. He added two sacks and one interception. Linebacker J.T. Thomas left Jacksonville in free agency, leaving Smith as the clear three-down linebacker next to Posluszny in nickel formations. Thanks to excellent athleticism and great instincts, Smith's 6-3, 220-pound frame doesn't hold him back.
The rookie out of Florida State will step into a rotational role at outside linebacker.
