2024 Fantasy Outlook
Hufanga continued his ascension as one of the top safeties in the league in 2023 by recording 52 tackles and three interceptions across 10 games before suffering a torn ACL in Week 11. Personally trained by legendary safety Troy Polamalu, Hufanga boasts a similar combination of physical play with a nose for the football. Head coach Kyle Shanahan expects his starting safety to return to the field sometime during training camp, putting Hufanga in position to be an impact IDP player for the 2024 season. October 25, 2024
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that it's "not a sure thing" that Hufanga will return from a wrist injury during the 2024 season, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hufanga played through knee and ankle injuries earlier in the regular season before suffering ligament damage in his right wrist in Week 5 against the Cardinals. He was placed on injured reserve Oct. 9, and while a four-game minimum stint would set his return for Nov. 10 against the Buccaneers, it appears the injury is severe enough for the 24-year-old safety to possibly be sidelined for the rest of the 2024 campaign. In Hufanga's absence, George Odum (knee) has provided valuable depth at safety behind starters Malik Mustapha and Ji'Ayir Brown.

Dan Marcus focuses on IDPs worthy of a Week 6 pickup, including JD Bertrand, who played 73 percent of defensive snaps in Week 5 and logged five tackles, which should continue if Troy Andersen remains out.
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Hufanga had a true breakout campaign in 2022, posting strong IDP numbers in the process (97 tackles, six turnovers and two sacks). The 23-year-old has been trained by legendary safety and fellow USC graduate Troy Polamalu, and the similarities showed both in aggressive style of play and flowing locks while patrolling the secondary. With veteran safety Jimmie Ward gone, Hufanga becomes the 49ers' top defensive back for this upcoming season.

Chance to return in Week 2

September 10, 2024
Hufanga has the chance to play Week 2 against Minnesota, David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hufanga is working his way back from an Achilles injury that ended his 2023 season early, and he avoided the PUP list while logging limited practice sessions ahead of Monday's Week 1 matchup against the Jets. While he was inactive for the season opener, coach Kyle Shanahan noted that he expects the safety to continue to ramp up his activity level in practice. Hufanga's status for Week 2 will not become clear until later in the week.
