Charlton (undisclosed) was released from injured reserve with an injury settlement Saturday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2017 first-round pick's time in San Francisco was short lived, as he's been released after agreeing to terms with the team Aug. 1. Charlton has spent six years in the NFL, appearing in 60 games and recording 95 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks. He had stints with Dallas, Miami, Kansas City, Pittsburgh and Chicago before joining the 49ers this offseason. It's unclear what the 28-year-old's injury is at the moment.

Charlton appeared in just seven games for the Chiefs last season before landing on IR due to a fractured right leg but re-upped with the club on a one-year deal this offseason. He rotated in along the defensive line when healthy last year and figures to serve in a similar role in 2021.
Charlton has been a disappointment to date in the NFL, recording only four sacks in 27 games over two seasons, but with David Irving gone and Robert Quinn suspended for two games to begin the year, he'll get at least one more chance with the Cowboys to make good on his first-round pedigree.
The 28th overall pick in the 2017 draft, Charlton started his career slowly but showed flashes of his pass-rushing ability as the season wore on, recording all three of his sacks after Week 8. DeMarcus Lawrence remains the lead dog on the Cowboys' defensive line, but if Charlton can take a step forward now that he has a year of NFL experience under his belt, he could produce some interesting IDP numbers.
Drafted 28th overall by the Cowboys, Charlton has an enviable combination of length and athleticism that could eventually allow him to develop into the kind of dominant edge rusher the Cowboys have lacked since DeMarcus Ware left as a free agent. Charlton's production at Michigan was inconsistent, however, and he has a lot of work ahead of him in the weight room and on the practice field before he potentially reaches that ceiling. Expect the rookie to be another body in the DE rotation early on, with the potential to make a more substantial impact in the second half.

Trade becoming more likely
DEDallas Cowboys
September 15, 2019
Charlton -- who will be inactive Week 2 at Washington -- should see trade talks surrounding his name heat up this week, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
ANALYSIS
Charlton missed Week 1 with an ankle injury, but was removed from the injury report this week. The fact the Cowboys are keeping the former first-round pick off the field suggests they want to take a conservative approach with his health, potentially saving him for another organization. Charlton has disappointed during his first two years in the league, accumulating just four sacks across 27 games. A change of scenery could help his journey back to IDP relevance.
