Ends retirement, joins Chiefs
Nelson signed with the Chiefs' practice squad Monday.
ANALYSIS
Back in June, Nelson announced his retirement from the NFL, despite coming off a strong 2023 campaign for the Texans in which he recoded 63 total tackles. After taking a few months off, Nelson has elected to resume his career, and he'll now look to impress during his time on the Chiefs' practice squad with the hope of earning a promotion to the 53-man roster before the end of the regular season.

Nelson signed a one-year deal with Houston prior to the 2022 season, then served as a starter and had a strong season for a porous Houston defense. He recorded 52 tackles and one interception in 15 games. The 30-year-old Nelson, looking for a raise, sat out the non-mandatory offseason activities. There was some public acrimony and a sense the two sides would part ways, but the organization blinked and signed him to a two-year deal. Prior to the deal, Nelson had reported to the mandatory offseason sessions and ran with the first-team defense in camp. He figures to start opposite Derek Stingley but first must compete with Shaquill Griffin and Desmond King for the job.

Texans head coach Lovie Smith said signing Nelson on Wednesday was a move made to improve the team's cornerback position this offseason, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. "Our play at the cornerback position last year was not good enough, it's as simple as that," Smith said. "We can't play the type of football that we want to play until we get better at the cornerback position, I will say that."
