Mundy (hip) was placed on season-ending injured reserve Sunday, CBS 2 Chicago's Zach Zaidman reports.
ANALYSIS
Mundy's hip injury was previously believed to be minor, but it turns out that isn't the case after he experienced a setback last week. A 16-game starter last season, Mundy was expected to provide depth behind Antrel Rolle and Adrian Amos, the projected starters at safety. Brock Vereen now likely becomes the Bears' third safety.

After serving as mostly a reserve for his first five NFL seasons, Mundy finally became a full-time starter in 2014 with the Bears. Though he’s little more than an average talent at safety, Mundy’s numbers benefited from playing on a leaky defense that struggled against both the run and the pass. He went on to finish with a team-leading 103 tackles and four interceptions, numbers that put him squarely on the IDP radar by season's end. In spite of that production, the new regime deemed Mundy an unsuitable starter at strong safety, effectively replacing him by signing Antrel Rolle to a big contract in free agency. Mundy was still in position to claim a role as the Bears' third safety, but any hope of him contributing in 2015 was nullified after he suffered an ankle injury in training camp that resulted in his placement on season-ending injured reserve.
Mundy was active in 16 games (nine starts) with the Steelers last season, notching 77 tackles, one sack and one interception. With both Chris Conte and the since-departed Major Wright registering as disappointments at safety last season, Mundy could have the inside track on a starting role, after assuming a large share of first-team reps at safety during minicamp. While Mundy should collect a decent amount of tackles if he emerges as a starter in Week 1, his inability to produce many turnovers over the course of his career limit his IDP upside.
Reserve free safety, should see plenty of time in nickel and dime packages.
Mundy filled in capably on defense in 2011 with 37 tackles and one interception. His strength is as a run-support safety and on special teams, and will be called on to backup Ryan Clark and Troy Polamalu.
Mundy is a backup safety, so the chances of his having an impact in the fantasy realm are limited. He totaled 25 tackles in 2009.
Mundy was a fixture on the practice squad in 2008. It is unlikely he'll have a fantasy impact in 2009 as he'll either remain on the practice squad or be a backup if he happens to carve out a role on the active roster.
