The Patriots waived McMillan on Friday.
ANALYSIS
The move makes room on the 53-man roster for Yannick Ngakoue, who the Patriots claimed off waivers Friday. McMillan has seen his snap count on defense dwindle over the course of the regular season, and through nine games he accumulated 45 tackles (25 solo) and one pass defended. Although a vested veteran, McMillan will land on the waiver wire since he was let go after the Nov. 5 trade deadline. He should draw plenty of interest from teams looking to bolster their linebacker corps.

The Dolphins tailored McMillan's defensive role in 2019 to minimize situations wherein his weakness in coverage would be exposed, resulting in the 24-year-old's quality of play increasing but his snap count sharply declining. It currently looks as though coach Brian Flores is unlikely to ever utilize McMillan as a three-down player unless he can improve his skills in coverage, which would minimize McMillan's individual statistics and fantasy value. If the former Ohio State star were able to develop and turn into an asset against the pass, however, his strong tackling abilities could lend him upside to rank among the league's tackle leaders.
After losing his rookie season to a torn ACL, McMillan not only shored up a long-standing position of weakness for the Dolphins at middle linebacker, but emerged as a leader among the team's defensive front in 2018. The 2017 second-round pick picked up steam after a rocky start to the year, averaging 7.9 tackles per game for the last eight games of the season and ending the year with the second-most tackles of any Dolphins player (105) trailing only Kiko Alonso. As the Dolphins shift towards a rebuild, McMillan has solidified himself as a piece to construct around.
The 54th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, McMillan's entire rookie season was lost after he suffered a torn ACL in the team's preseason opener. The lack of a starting MLB haunted the Dolphins throughout their entire 2017 campaign, and the lack of competition brought in during the offseason suggests confidence that the position remains firmly McMillan's. The athletic 21-year-old should be a key piece of what looks to be a stout Miami front seven.
Originally McMillan was expected to open the season as a backup linebacker but the placement of Koa Misi (neck) on season ending injured reserve has made McMillan the favorite to start at OLB from day one. He was selected in the second-round of the 2017 NFL Draft and could be a part an impressive trio of linebackers along with Kiko Alonso and Lawrence Timmons.
