2024 Fantasy Outlook
After signing a one-year deal with Washington in March, Mariota will back up No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels. In Mariota's last two years as a Week 1 starter -- 2019 in Tennessee and 2022 in Atlanta -- he lost the job before the season was out. Last season was spent backing up Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. Mariota is a capable game manager, but he takes a lot of sacks and struggles with downfield accuracy, and he's often been plagued by injuries during his 10-year career. He's still mobile, though, so perhaps his rushing ability will lead to fantasy value if he ends up filling in for Daniels at some point. Read Past Outlooks
RANKS
Produces three touchdowns in relief
Mariota completed 15 of 18 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 23-19 win over the Cowboys. He added 56 rushing yards and a touchdown on five carries.
ANALYSIS
Mariota played the entire second half of the contest in Week 18, filling in after rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels (leg) was removed from the game as a precaution. The veteran QB played well, leading the Commanders on a touchdown drive immediately after entering the game. With Daniels' injury apparently not serious, it appears that Mariota will return to backup duties when the Commanders visit the Buccaneers for a wild-card round matchup Sunday.

After going two seasons without a start, Mariota spent most of last year as Atlanta's top quarterback. He started 13 games before being benched for rookie Desmond Ridder and finished the year on injured reserve due to a knee injury. His performance in those outings makes it easy to see why he'll be back in a reserve role this fall, backing up Jalen Hurts for the Eagles. Mariota's mobility makes him a good fit as Hurts' main reserve, as his 438 rushing yards in 2022 ranked sixth among all QBs, but he didn't do much with his arm. He ranked 30th in passing yards per game (170.7), clearing 200 yards just three times and topping out at 253. He added 15 touchdowns and nine picks.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
In contention for Week 8 start
Mariota could be headed for his first start of the season Sunday against the Bears, as Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports that Jayden Daniels was absent for a second consecutive practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Daniels will have one more chance to take the practice field Friday, but the rookie second overall pick has yet to practice since exiting early in the Commanders' 40-7 Week 7 win over the Panthers due to a rib injury. Washington's offense didn't slow down whatsoever after Mariota entered in relief against Carolina, so the Commanders have little reason to rush Daniels' return.
