Snags pick in loss
SDallas Cowboys
December 10, 2024
Hooker tallied seven tackles (four solo) and an interception in the Cowboys' loss to the Bengals on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Hooker was one of the few bright spots on Dallas' defense during Monday's loss as he recorded the team's only interception of Joe Burrow, which was his second of the campaign. Throughout 13 games played this season, the 2017 first-round pick has racked up 61 tackles (36 solo), which is just one short of his career high set back in 2022.

After four injury-plagued seasons with the Colts, Hooker has stayed mostly healthy in two years with the Cowboys and shown he still has the talent that made him a first-round pick in 2017. Last year's 62 tackles were a personal best, while his three interceptions tied the career-high mark he set as a rookie, and he's a key part of Dallas' three-headed safety corps that also featured Donovan Wilson and Jayron Kearse.
The 2017 first-rounder missed three games last season due to a knee injury but started all 13 contests that he did suit up for. In the process, Hooker logged 51 tackles, three pass breakups and two interceptions. Due to a series of injuries and consistency issues over his first three NFL seasons, the Colts decided not to pick up Hooker's fifth-year option, so 2020 will be a pivotal one for the team's starting free safety, who has shown flashes when healthy.
Hooker injured his foot during the opening round of the playoffs and wasn't able to suit up when the Colts were eliminated by Kansas City the next week. The 2017 first-round pick is locked in as a starter, sitting on 65 tackles (45 solo), eight passes defensed and five interceptions in 21 career games. His role as a traditional free safety isn't conductive to steady IDP production, but Hooker's strong work in deep coverage makes him quite valuable to the Colts.
You generally want to target tackle sources among IDPs because of the stability of tackle production relative to sacks or turnovers, but Hooker might be the uncommon safety whose interception production is worth chasing. Hooker's 22 tackles on 410 snaps from last year is a tackle rate nothing less than anemic, but that also gives reason to suspect he can only improve in that regard. Meanwhile, his three interceptions in that play count make it appear as if the ball-hawking skills he showed at Ohio State translate reliably to the NFL level. His recovery from ACL repair warrants monitoring this summer, though.
Hooker was taken by the Colts with the 15th overall pick in the 2017 draft and he's expected to start at safety from day one. A sports hernia cost him OTAs and will prevent him from practicing with the Colts until training camp. Despite the delay, Hooker is a tremendous talent who could produce solid fantasy numbers as a rookie once healthy. Additionally, Hooker will have the benefit of playing alongside Vontae Davis and Darius Butler, quality secondary players that can assist his transition to the NFL.
