Selected in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Rountree's uneventful rookie season didn't do him any favors entering 2022 and the acquisition of Sony Michel late in the preseason doomed Rountree's slim chances of the making the 53-man roster to start the campaign. Rountree eventually did make his way back on to the active roster by Week 10, but the Missouri product shuttled between the practice squad and spot plays via special teams for the majority of the season. A brutal 2.2 yards-per-carry average across nearly 50 carries doesn't make for an obvious roster lock, meaning Rountree once again will be fighting for one of the Chargers' final backfield spots to begin 2023.
Rountree was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft to provide the Chargers with another option in short-yardage situations, but his rookie season ended up being uneventful. The 23-year-old saw 67 of his 100 total offensive snaps come in his first seven games, but a modest 2.5 yards per carry during that stretch forced the Chargers to use Justin Jackson and Joshua Kelley more as the season progressed. By Week 12 Rountree was purely used as a special-teams player, a role that could be his ticket to active status on a weekly basis, especially with 2022 Isaiah Spiller now in the mix.
For the third straight year, the Chargers tabbed a running back in the NFL draft, this time around selecting Rountree in the sixth round. At 5-10, 211 pounds, the Missouri product could emerge as a short-yardage option for the team. A reported 4.62 40-yard dash at his pro day seems to confirm the lack of breakaway speed that routinely shows up on Rountree's collegiate tape, but the three-year starter was a dependable workhorse who also has experience playing on special teams. That should help his cause in what is already shaping up to be a tight competition for backup slotting, with returnees in Kelley and Justin Jackson also in the mix.
