Kenny Phillips: Released by Saints
SFree Agent
October 6, 2015
Phillips was released by the Saints on Tuesday, Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
With Jairus Byrd now healthy, the Saints no longer need Phillips, who played nearly every snap in Weeks 2 and 3. The former first-round draft pick is unlikely to draw interest as anything more than a depth option.

Phillips will compete to be a backup safety with the Saints. A first round draft pick in 2008, Phillips hasn't played in a regular season game since 2012 due to various injuries.
A former top prospect at safety, knee troubles have chopped away at Phillips' athleticism and durability, and he heads to Philadelphia hoping to regain his past form. Phillips has made an IDP impact in the past, and he could very well do the same with Philadelphia if he stays healthy.
Phillips is due for a breakout year after very nearly pulling one off in 2011, a season in which he finished with 82 tackles (59 solo) and four interceptions in 15 games. Microfracture knee surgery prior to the 2009 season stunted his development, but last year's solid production is a sign that he could be nearing peak form. Considering he was a rare safety talent prior to the injury, such a peak would probably result in stellar IDP numbers. With the Giants’ extremely disruptive front seven, Phillips will at least continue to have opposing quarterbacks hurried, which should result in more off-target passes than most safeties see.
After missing most of 2009, Phillips returned in 2010 but was protected by the team while recovering from microfracture knee surgery. In 2011, the team vows to turn Phillips loose, and that could pay IDP dividends if the fast, hard-hitting safety is all the way back from his knee injury. He'll be the team's starting strong safety.
Big, fast, hard-hitting, playmaking safety attempting to return from microfracture surgery to his knee. Early reports are good, and if he can make it all the way back, Phillips could be a top-five IDP defensive back. But he's far from out of the woods with the injury at press time.
With the departure of James Butler, Phillips moves into the starting free safety spot this year, bringing top flight athleticism, excellent speed and big hitting to the table. Last year's first-round pick is unproven, but he has the upside to be a top IDP.
Phillips was drafted in the first-round by the Giants out of the University of Miami and has a chance to earn a starting spot in the secondary out of training camp. He has been compared to Ed Reed and Sean Taylor and could hold tremendous IDP value.
