ANALYSIS
Clinton-Dix joined the Raiders on Sept. 13 after being cut by San Francisco during training camp. Other than a couple of special-teams snaps in Week 3 against Miami, Clinton-Dix hasn't seen any game action this season. A first-round pick of the Packers back in 2014, Clinton-Dix reunites with his former coach Mike McCarthy in Dallas. The veteran safety has never been able to quite match the IDP production he flashed in his first two NFL seasons, but last year's 78 tackles with Chicago were actually a career low. Clinton-Dix has yet to miss a game in his career, and with 16 career interceptions, he brings with him a ball-hawking mindset the Cowboys have lacked in recent years as he assumes a starting role alongside Xavier Woods in the secondary.
Clinton-Dix came over to the Bears after a second straight injury-shortened campaign, a span in which he played just 16 games. As a former first-round pick, he's had name recognition that has caused him to go higher in drafts than his production warranted, but he did pick off at least three passes in three of the last four years, so he has upside. Now with an excellent defense that can pressure quarterbacks, he could come up with a big fantasy season and be a good player to gamble on if the cost isn't too high.
With just 159 tackles over the last two years, it appears Clinton-Dix is unlikely to find his way back to the tackle rate he showed his first two seasons, a span in which he posted 193 stops. It can't be taken for certain, though, as it's impossible to anticipate the exact methods of new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. If he's not piling up tackles, Clinton-Dix is still a likely standout IDP due to his playmaking abilities, and his durability has been a plus to this point, too.
Clinton-Dix might not possess the same game-to-game upside as teammate and fellow safety Morgan Burnett, but the superior durability displayed by Clinton-Dix gives him a higher aggregate projection. Clinton-Dix has yet to miss a game as he heads into his fourth year as a starter boasting standout potential in each of the tackle, sack and interception categories. He's averaging roughly 91 tackles, 1.5 sacks and three interceptions per year to this point and could take a step forward in his age-24 season.
Clinton-Dix might not have the IDP upside of his teammate Morgan Burnett, but he probably offers a better floor as the more durable of the two heading into 2016. He hit the triple-digit tackle mark in 2015, his second year in the league at just 22 years old, and the year before that he totaled 93 tackles on a lesser play count. With two years of a tackle rate over nine percent, Clinton-Dix looks like a very reliable investment, and if Aaron Rodgers can stay healthy all year, forcing opponents to play catch-up more often, Clinton-Dix should add some interceptions (three in two years).
Clinton-Dix was expected to play a minor role as a rookie last season, but he impressed almost immediately and earned a three-down role early in the year. Even with Morgan Burnett gobbling up 130 tackles in the secondary, HHCD fell just short of 100 tackles, posting 67 tackles in his final 10 games. He should threaten the triple-digit threshold again this season.
Clinton-Dix was widely considered the top safety prospect in this year's draft, but he had to sit back and watch the Jets draft Louisville S Calvin Pryor ahead of him. He doesn't have a ton of game-breaking ability, but Clinton-Dix is a reliable player that will likely start at free safety for the Packers. His IDP value is somewhat limited in that role, as he likely won't be in on a lot of tackles, although he did pick off seven passes in his last two years at Alabama.
