Cut from Chiefs' practice squad
RBFree Agent
January 19, 2022
McGuire was cut from the Chiefs' practice squad Wednesday, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The running back joined the Chiefs' practice unit in October but failed to crack the active roster before being cut Wednesday. McGuire has not appeared in an NFL game since 2018 and will look to find another practice squad opportunity ahead of the 2022 season.

McGuire, who made a minor impact with the Jets back in 2017 and 2018, could carve out a spot on the Chiefs' roster in a depth role as a special teams contributor. He's likely competing with Darwin Thompson and Derrick Gore to claim the team's fourth running back spot behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Darrel Williams and Jerrick McKinnon. McGuire spent a portion of last season on the Chiefs' practice squad, while Darwin Thompson was on the active roster, so it may take an impressive showing at camp for him to move up the list.
McGuire spent the 2019 season on the Chiefs' practice squad and signed a reserve/future contract from the team in early February. While he should be given an opportunity to compete for a 53-man roster spot in training camp and the preseason, McGuire joins the likes of Darwin Thompson and third-year pro Darrel Williams behind rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who should head the Chiefs' rushing attack. Williams and Thompson have more experience in the system, so McGuire may be buried in the pecking order.
Injuries at the position freed up the starting running back job for McGuire late last season, and he responded by turning 67 carries and nine catches into 304 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns over the final four weeks. A busy offseason that saw the team bring in veteran free agents Le'Veon Bell and Ty Montgomery will relegate McGuire to a backup role at best, but the 2017 sixth-rounder shouldn't have a problem making the roster and could gain fantasy relevance should Bell get hurt.
A 2017 sixth-round pick, McGuire is a shifty running back whose value should come primarily from catching the ball out of the backfield. He rushed 88 times for 315 yards and added 177 yards on 17 receptions as a rookie, making a decent to stay involved for 2018. He was expected to get some touches as the Jets' likely No. 3 running back, the plan may have been derailed by a foot fracture suffered in late July. With his recovery timeline estimated at six weeks, McGuire could open the regular season on the PUP list, which would rule him out until Week 7.
McGuire's first two collegiate seasons were nothing short of excellent, as the 5-10, 214-pounder averaged 7.9 yards per carry, while scoring 22 touchdowns on just 269 carries. He was, however, limited over his last two years due to lingering foot issues that sapped most of his explosiveness. He was an excellent pass catcher in college, a skill that didn't diminish with his injuries, and it will be the key to any playing time this season as he tries to carve out a role behind Bilal Powell and Matt Forte, two players he could certainly learn from given their own receiving skills.

ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old back hasn't appeared in an NFL game since accumulating 469 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns as a Jet in 2018. He did, however, join the Chiefs' practice squad late last November before being waived at the start of the 2020 regular season. Should Clyde Edwards-Helaire miss time with what is feared to be a high-ankle sprain and a strained hip, McGuire could provide depth at the position behind Le'Veon Bell.
