Entering his eighth season, the journeyman safety has played for six teams in the NFL. His most productive stretch of play came from 2017-2018 when he recorded eight interceptions, 20 pass breakups and four forced fumbles with Washington. He'll face plenty of competition for snaps at safety in the form of starter Marcus Williams and second-year man Saquan Hampton.
Swearinger has been wild in most senses since his college days at South Carolina, which has resulted in sputtering opportunities despite NFL-level talent. He publicly criticized defensive coordinator Greg Manusky to the point that Washington cut Swearinger in-season. But that Arizona pursued Swearinger immediately afterward could indicate a new leash. He might blow it again between his attitude and head-hunting, but Swearinger is a natural heat-seeker on the field and carries intriguing snap volume upside as Arizona goes with a max-tempo offense.
During his first season in the nation's capital, Swearinger not only secured the starting job at strong safety but also served as one of the team's four captains - the only member of the Redskins defense to have that honor. He ultimately logged over 1,000 snaps without missing a game, which translated to a solid stat line consisting of 79 tackles, 10 pass breakups and four picks. With his role not expected to change in 2018, Swearinger could potentially improve upon those numbers, especially if the team's revamped defensive line can consistently wreak havoc in the backfield.
The hard-hitting safety moved across the country from Arizona to Washington, D.C. after signing a three-year deal with the Redskins this offseason. Swearinger figures to take over as the starting free safety for veteran DeAngelo Hall, who missed almost the entire 2016 season due to a torn ACL. Swearinger will look to follow up his commendable 2016 campaign, which included 66 tackles, eight pass deflections, three interceptions and two sacks through 16 games with the Cardinals.
The 2013 second-rounder recorded 73 tackles and two interceptions for the Texans last season and will provide depth at safety.
Swearinger finished the 2013 season in the starting lineup, but is likely to become a backup in 2014 after the Texans signed free agents Chris Clemons and Kendrick Lewis. Still, he brought an attitude to the position the Texans liked in 2013. If he can curtail the extra-curricular stuff (i.e. limit unnecessary penalties), he could press for playing time.
Swearinger, a second round draft pick in 2013, is expected to be one of the four safeties on the roster to open the season.
