Daniel announced Tuesday via his personal Twitter account that he will begin his media career during the 2023 NFL and college football seasons.
ANALYSIS
Though he didn't specifically confirm that he has retired from professional football, the 36-year-old quarterback looks like he's ready to close the book on a 14-year NFL career that included stops with Washington, New Orleans, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit and the Chargers. A longtime backup, Daniel claimed his lone Super Bowl ring with the Saints during the 2009 season and made just five starts among his 74 career regular-season appearances, completing 186 of 273 pass attempts (68.1 percent) for 1,746 yards, nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. He'll have a full plate in his first year working in the media, as he'll serve as an on-air correspondent for NFL Network in addition to co-hosting two podcasts.

Daniel joined the Chargers last season, but the veteran backup didn't attempt a regular season pass in 2021. On the plus side, starting QB Justin Herbert credited a degree of his second-year ascent to Daniel's tutelage within Joe Lombardi's offensive system. The 35-year-old remains the team's No. 2 signal-caller (ahead of Easton Stick and Brandon Peters) in 2022.
The Chargers have put a premium on veteran backup quarterbacks in recent years, so it made sense to see Daniel reunite with coaches Brandon Staley and Joe Lombardi late in the offseason. The 34-year-old played sparingly in 2020, most notably filling in for the injured Matthew Stafford during the Buccaneers demolition of the Lions in Week 16, completing 13 of his 18 attempts for 86 yards. Now with his sixth team in a journeyman career, Daniel's prime focus will be providing a steady veteran presence behind last year's Rookie of the Year, Justin Herbert.
Detroit wants to go back to having an experienced veteran at backup quarterback after last year's combination of Jeff Driskel and David Blough lost eight consecutive starts once Matthew Stafford went on IR. While it needed a three-year, $13 million contract to lure Daniel from Chicago, the damage would be worthwhile if he could win games. Although the Lions probably still hope he never sees the field, Daniel owns a steady 68 percent career completion rate over five starts and 65 total game appearances. Should he need to be forced into action, his experience and accuracy should prove to be an upgrade over what the team had last year.
When Daniel was brought to Chicago last year, it was largely due to the experience he had in coach Matt Nagy's offensive system, and that move paid off when Mitchell Trubisky missed a pair of games with an injury. In those starts, both of which were on the road, he averaged 258 passing yards and threw three touchdowns, showing that he was more than serviceable in his role. Should Trubisky be forced to miss time in 2019, Daniel may be useful to fantasy owners who are required to start two quarterbacks.
Joining his fourth team as he enters his ninth season as a reserve with only 78 pass attempts, Daniel's expected to be the clear backup to Mitchell Trubisky. Despite seeing such a small amount of field time, he's spent his career learning some excellent offenses, especially during stints with the Saints and the Chiefs, so he could potentially be an above-average second-stringer. Should he be pressed into a starting role, the new weapons that Chicago has added at wide receiver could give him a chance to perform well enough to serve as a fantasy backup, or a lower-end starter in leagues that start two quarterbacks. However, with such a small body of work, there's no way to know how good he is at this stage.
The veteran quarterback actually started his career in New Orleans, spending four seasons with the Saints after initially making the team as an undrafted free agent in 2009. After stints as a backup in Kansas City and, most recently, Philadelphia, Daniels returned to New Orleans this offseason. The nine-year pro is expected to back up starting quarterback Drew Brees.
Following a three-year stint with the Chiefs as a backup, there was noise heading into the offseason that Daniel could garner interest from teams in free agency as a potential candidate to become a starting quarterback. He elected to sign with the Eagles, who also drafted Carson Wentz with the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, so Daniel will once again need an injury in front of him if he's going to see the field.
Daniel served as the Chiefs' backup quarterback in 2014, receiving one start due to an Alex Smith injury. He'll likely serve in the same role for the Chiefs in 2015, only receiving meaningful playing time if Alex Smith gets injured.
After serving as the backup to starter Alex Smith in 2013, Daniel enters camp in a competition with fifth-round pick Aaron Murray and 2013 holdover Tyler Bray for the No. 2 quarterback spot. In his only start last season, in Week 17, Daniel completed 21-of-30 passes for 200 yards and a score.
Daniel is unlikely to see the field in 2013, barring an injury to starter Alex Smith.
Daniel is expected to back up Drew Brees at quarterback with the Saints.
Daniel will enter the year as the backup at quarterback to Drew Brees. Daniel has only attempted three career passes so the Saints hope for nothing but health for Brees.
Daniel will compete with Sean Canfield for the Saints backup quarterback position behind Drew Brees. The team is also looking to sign a veteran quarterback before training camp begins to join the competition.
For Daniel to stick to the Washington roster he needs to beat out Colt Brennan or hope Colt Brennan beats out Todd Collins. If Collins wins the 2nd string job, Daniel would need to beat Brennan for the 3rd spot. However, as 14-year veteran, Collins would be too expensive to keep as a 3rd stringer in the event that Brennan wins the 2nd string job, opening the way for the cheaper Daniel to take the 3rd spot. Collins and Brennan already have their feet in the door, however, so Washington might try to sneak the undrafted Daniel to the practice squad.
