The Chargers released Mebane on Friday, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Mebane, who contemplated retirement last offseason, has spent the last four seasons with Los Angeles. He notched 27 tackles and a sack across 13 regular-season games in 2019. If the 35-year-old opts to continue his career, he'll be immediately free to look for a shot as a rotational linebacker elsewhere in the league. Per Daniel Popper of The Athletic, Mebane's release frees up $4.25 against the salary cap for the Chargers.

Entering his 12th season in the NFL, Mebane doesn't appear to be slowing down, having registered 30 tackles in 2017. A dependable and sturdy nose tackle, the 33-year-old is expected to solidify a defensive line that is rapidly growing into one of the best in the league.
Mebane missed the final six games of the 2016 season after tearing his bicep, but he managed to solidify a young defensive line prior to the injury racking up 21 tackles, a sack and an interception while freeing up space for pass rushers Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram. Now healthy, the 32-year-old will look to revive the aforementioned role once more.
Rarely a stat-stuffer, Mebane was a reliable presence along the Seahawks defensive line throughout five seasons, giving the team a consistent source upfront capable of taking on multiple blockers. The Chargers, who signed Mebane to a three-year deal in the offseason, hope that he can provide that same type of consistency to free up emerging linebackers Manti Te'o and Denzel Perryman.
Mebane was limited to nine games last year because of a season-ending torn hamstring. His bowling-ball presence in the middle of the defensive line was greatly missed. But he's healthy this year and ready to resume his run-stuffing role, taking on blocks so linebackers can get to the ball. As such, he doesn't get the opportunity for many sacks or tackles.
Mebane doesn't get the opportunity to pile up stats (he didn't have a sack last season), but he is a key piece of the defense at tackle. His job is to occupy blockers and blow up plays, allowing others to get to the ball. Few do it better. His backside pursuit is impressive at 311 pounds.
Mebane is slated to start at left defensive tackle this season for the Seahawks. His only fantasy value would be in leagues that require a DT, as he recorded 49 tackles last season in 15 games with just 1.5 sacks.
Mebane loses his starting DT spot this season with the additions of Colin Cole and Cory Redding. He'll still be actively involved in the defensive-line rotation, though. Don't expect much in the way of fantasy stats.
Mebane will start at defensive tackle and will serve as a run-stopper. He'll find it tough to compile more than a few sacks.
A third-round pick in June's draft, Mebane adds defensive line depth. He could be the run-stuffer the team needs.
