ANALYSIS
Snell spent most of the offseason as a free agent but joined the Lions in mid-August. However, he was unable to secure a spot on the team's 53-man roster. After spending the last four seasons as a backup running back in Pittsburgh, the 2019 fourth-rounder will need to seek out other opportunities ahead of the 2023 campaign.

After two years of a small workload as a depth option in the Steelers backfield, Snell saw his touches crater in 2021 following the addition of Najee Harris, which was no surprise considering both the draft capital used on Harris and Snell's mediocre production beforehand. The 2019 fourth-round pick out of Kentucky played all 17 games, seeing a majority of his playing time on special teams, and at the very least he seems to have earned coach Mike Tomlin's favor over the likes of fellow depth backs Anthony McFarland and Trey Edmunds. As a runner, Snell shows good patience and power, but a lack of speed or elusiveness limits his ability to create big plays beyond what’s blocked. He's also seen little use on passing downs, with 22 targets in 46 NFL games. Snell's roster spot seems fairly safe given his special-teams role, and he faces light competition for the No. 2 spot again, but Harris' backups won't see much work unless he's unavailable. Other than Snell, the depth RB options in Pittsburgh are McFarland, Edmunds and undrafted rookies Jaylen Warren and Mataeo Durant.
Snell had the chance to earn an increased role late in the 2020 season, but he failed to make a significant impact while recording just three more carries than he did in 2019. His 3.3 yards per carry ranked second-worst among running backs with at least 100 carries, and he only totaled 368 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Although James Conner signed with the Cardinals during the offseason, Snell is slated to serve as a backup once again this year after the Steelers drafted Najee Harris in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Snell was drafted before last season to provide insurance for the oft-injured James Conner, which proved to be advantageous with Conner playing in just 10 games. The rookie finished second to Conner in rushing -- by just 38 yards -- but inconsistent play leaves doubts about his ability to be a three-down workhorse. Along with Jaylen Samuels, a jam-packed backfield grew more crowded with the selection of Anthony McFarland in the fourth round of the draft, which may result in a committee approach that curbs the fantasy production of all involved.
The Kentucky product certainly has the bloodlines to succeed in the NFL. His father, Benjamin Sr., was drafted by the Ravens, though his pro career was spent in NFL Europe and the first iteration of the XFL, while his great-uncle Matt scored the Jets' only TD in their Super Bowl III victory. Snell looks the part of a pro back too and runs with solid patience and power, traits that should make him a good fit for a Steelers offense with a Le'Veon Bell-shaped hole in it. Snell is no Bell, though. A lack of elusiveness limits his ability to chew up yardage after hitting the hole, so his probable future role will be as a short-yardage specialist and red-zone weapon. There might not be many touches available behind James Conner, but Snell could at least challenge Jaylen Samuels for the No. 2 job.
