February 4, 2024
Goodwin finished the 2023 season with four catches (on 13 targets) for 67 yards over 12 games.
ANALYSIS
Goodwin dealt with blood clots during the preseason and a November concussion, but he never became the expected deep threat when healthy, save for a 57-yard catch that was big in a come-from-behind victory over Chicago. Quarterback Deshaun Watson's shoulder injury blew up Cleveland's passing game, so Goodwin's minimal impact should be viewed under that light. The signing of Goodwin seemed like a good fit at the time, and the wideout-needy Browns could bring back the unrestricted free agent for 2024.

Goodwin was one of the Browns' two veteran wide receiver acquisitions during the offseason. The team signed the 32-year-old one day after trading for 23-year-old Elijah Moore from the Jets. The duo adds to the wideout unit's overall speed, an offseason priority, and gives QB Deshaun Watson two more reliable targets beyond Amari Cooper and Donovan Peoples-Jones. Goodwin's primary role will be as a deep threat and to occasionally run fly routes. He enters training camp fourth on the depth chart can could fall further depending on the development of third-round pick Cedric Tillman.
After multi-year stints with the Bills and 49ers to begin his career, Goodwin opted out of the 2020 campaign and then filled a depth role for the Bears last season. In 14 games, he corralled 20 of 40 targets for 313 yards and one touchdown while working with quarterbacks Justin Fields and Andy Dalton. Goodwin still has world-class speed at his disposal, as evidenced by two receptions of 40-plus yards in 2021. Now with the Seahawks, he's even further down the depth chart, and with Geno Smith claiming the starting job over Drew Lock, Goodwin's prospects are tepid at best.
A rare NFL player with legitimate world-class speed, Goodwin enters his age-31 season after opting out of the 2020 campaign. The aforementioned speed hasn't yielded much on the field, aside from a 56-catch, 962-yard performance for the 49ers in 2017. That also was the only occasion in which he logged a full 16 games. Since the breakout, he's played in just 20 of 32 contests. However, he rebounded this summer and appears to have earned the Bears' No. 3 receiver job, albeit in an offense that figures to use a lot of multi-TE formations. Goodwin isn't likely to be consistent from week to week, but his speed could allow for big games here and there.
The Eagles acquired Goodwin from the 49ers in a swap of sixth-round picks in this year's draft. After 962 yards receiving in 2017, the Texas product entered each of the subsequent seasons as a starter in San Francisco but was unable to finish them due to ankle and knee injuries which former coach Kyle Shanahan once deemed chronic. Regardless, Goodwin has decided to opt out of the 2020 season, citing health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2018 season should have been Goodwin's breakout year following an offseason full of praise, but a Week 1 quadriceps injury seemed to impact him even after he returned to the lineup. In addition to missing time with an Achilles injury at the end of the season, he sat out a few weeks for personal reasons. Goodwin was efficient anyway, averaging 9.0 YPT and scoring four times on only 44 targets, but his workload concerns got worse with San Francisco's second-round selection of Deebo Samuel. Goodwin is an Olympic athlete with back-to-back seasons around 9.0 YPT, though, and Jimmy Garoppolo's return means the 49ers passing game should go somewhere. Even with Samuel around, it would be foolish to ignore Goodwin as a late-round target when last year's disappointment is fully explained by circumstances outside of his control.
Goodwin's always had elite speed - his 4.27 40 time is among the league's best the last five years - and when Pierre Garcon went down he finally got regular work, which suited him. Goodwin averaged 17.2 YPC (2nd) and 9.2 YPT (6th) and had five catches of 40-plus yards (T-8th) despite being only 24th in targets. At 5-9, 180, Goodwin is small and not especially cut out for red-zone work. Moreover, Garcon is due back this summer and could reprise his prior role as the team's No. 1 target and best threat near the goal line. But quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo targeted Goodwin 39 times for 356 yards over four starts Weeks 13-16 (Goodwin left early with a concussion in Week 17), so his role as the deep threat in coach Kyle Shanahan's up-and-coming offense is not in doubt, especially after Goodwin signed a three-year, $18.9 million extension in March. San Francisco did select wide receiver Dante Pettis in the second round of this year's draft, but Pettis' main job might be returning kicks, at least to start his career.
Goodwin's size and speed make him a capable deep threat for a revamped San Francisco receiving corps. Last year's 431 receiving yards represented a career-high for the 26-year-old, so he will likely fly under the radar in fantasy drafts this year. There is some sleeper potential here, though, as Kyle Shanahan turned Taylor Gabriel -- a receiver with similar size and skill to Goodwin -- into a fantasy-relevant option in the two seasons they spent together (2014 with the Browns and 2016 with the Falcons).
Goodwin is an Olympic athlete. Literally. He competed in the 2012 London Olympics in the long jump and is training in an effort to compete again this summer. The Bills have been supportive of him and look forward to helping him harness his phenomenal speed and athleticism as an NFL wide receiver. For fantasy purposes, the best case here is a lightning-in-a-bottle scenario, but it is more likely that Goodwin will not produce any value in 2016.
Following a rookie season that included 17 catches for 283 yards and three touchdowns, Goodwin mustered just one catch (on nine targets) for 42 yards last season. Overall, the 5-9, 179-pound speedster lacks a complete skill set, which limits him to certain offensive packages because he gets pushed around easily at the line of scrimmage. With that in mind, Goodwin figures to compete for a roster spot as the Bills approach the upcoming season. At best, he's a return specialist and a very occasional home run threat on offense.
The 5-9 speedster didn't put up huge numbers as a rookie, but the Bills were pleased with his development as a receiver. The additions of fourth overall pick Sammy Watkins and former Buc Mike Williams don't point to a big increase in targets, but if Goodwin continues to progress coach Doug Marrone could start to find creative wayd to get the ball in his hands.
Goodwin, a third-round pick by the Bills, will make the final 53-man roster based on his speed alone (sub-4.3 40-yard times), especially in such an unexperienced corps.

Goodwin will miss the start of Browns' training camp due to blood clots in his legs and lungs that were discovered during a recent checkup, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
An offseason signee following a solid season with the Seahawks, Goodwin's training camp debut with Cleveland will be put on hold indefinitely after he was placed on the active/non-football injury list Friday. The veteran speedster will be vying for a complementary downfield role similar to the one he filled in Seattle last season whenever he is healthy.
