Cut loose by Carolina
SFree Agent
March 18, 2020
The Panthers are releasing Reid on Wednesday, Jeff Darlington of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a surprise cut after Reid notched 130 tackles and four sacks in 2019, the first season of a three-year, $22 million contract. Granted, the tackle numbers were inflated by Carolina's ineptitude defending the run, and Reid drew brutal marks from Pro Football Focus for his work in pass coverage -- a 36.1 grade to be exact. The longer track record is solid but unspectacular, so Reid should have another shot at a starting job soon enough.

Reid was unemployed for the first three weeks of last year, and as his subsequent performance proved, he wasn't without work for performance reasons. His decision to use his voice against powerful interests was held against him, but the Panthers were desperate enough for safety help that they gave in and signed Reid anyway near the end of September. He jumped into the starting lineup immediately and had what might have been his best pro season yet, producing 71 tackles on just 735 snaps while posting strong marks in coverage. His per-snap tackle rate might regress more toward his career averages in 2019, but Reid still looks like a viable DB2 type in IDP leagues.
Reid has a wider range of potential outcomes than most players on this list due to his expected role change -- moving from a center fielder free safety to a strong safety type -- as well as the potentially misleading career production accumulated in the former role. Reid has never exceeded 77 tackles in his four NFL seasons, but he played far from the line of scrimmage in the first three, and he was on pace for nearly 100 tackles last year (62 in 10 games) before suffering a season-ending biceps injury. Reid is expected to play in the box more this season.
Of all the 49ers defenders, Reid may be the one who stands to benefit most from the new uptempo conditions brought by coach Kelly. Reid hasn't been much of an IDP factor in the NFL, always proving much better in real life than the box score would imply. But Kelly's arrival should mean a role adjustment for Reid, who previously played a centerfield role but now gets a scheme that made two productive IDP safeties last year out of Malcolm Jenkins and Walter Thurmond. Reid is a big, athletic safety who could really break out if he plays closer to the line of scrimmage.
Reid went through a sophomore slump in 2014, dropping off in both tackles (41 total) and interceptions (three). Assuming good health, Reid possesses the size and speed to bounce back in 2015 as the team's starting free safety. While worth noting that he suffered his third concussion in two years in Week 16 versus the Chargers, all signs point to him being ready for the start of the season. However, suffering another concussion could put his football future in jeopardy.
Reid had a stellar rookie campaign in 2013, recording 73 tackles and four interceptions while making the Pro Bowl. The only blemish was that he suffered two concussions, an issue that will be have to monitored closely in 2014.
Reid has some big shoes to fill with the departure of Dashon Goldson, but the 49ers are expecting him to do just that. Should Reid land the starting job, he could be an IDP sleeper to keep an eye on.

Could fit with Washington
SFree Agent
October 25, 2020
Washington could call in Reid to fill the safety vacancy created by Landon Collins' season-ending Achilles injury, JP Finlay of NBC Sports speculates.
ANALYSIS
Finlay notes that coach Ron Rivera, who has a relationship with Reid from their Carolina days, said back in September that "We're in a fortunate position where we have Landon Collins. A guy like Eric Reid wouldn't fit us here. But if we didn't [have Collins], believe me, I'd call him." Now, Washington no longer has Collins available and is in need of a win-now safety, as the team is just half a game behind the division-leading Eagles in the NFC East.
