Kirkpatrick had 55 tackles and an interception after beginning the season as one of the Bengals' top two corners. The advanced metrics suggest that Kirkpatrick wasn't one of the two best that the Bengals have to offer, however, as he was outperformed by both William Jackson III and Darqueze Dennard. Still, with Adam Jones gone Kirkpatrick at worst rates as the Bengals #3 corner, which should give him plenty opportunities to tackle the slot receiver after he makes a catch against Kirkpatrick.
Last season, Kirkpatrick more than tripled the number of tackles from the previous year, going from 23 to 70. He added 16 pass defenses, another career-high, but failed to record a single interception. The Bengals took William Jackson in the first round of the draft, and while the pick suggests displeasure with Kirkpatrick, the rookie may miss all of 2016 after suffering a torn pectoral during training camp.
After an injury riddled rookie year, Kirkpatrick recovered to play 14 games last season, recording 30 tackles (23 solo), three interceptions, and one touchdown. Health permitting, the 2012 first-rounder should continue to increase his involvement at cornerback this season, especially considering the fragility of teammates like Leon Hall and Terence Newman. Kirkpatrick is a long cornerback that can really cover ground in coverage and will hope for a breakout 2014 campaign.
Injuries limited Kirkpatrick, a first-round selection in 2012, to just five games during his rookie campaign. However, at 6-1, the former Alabama standout has great size and speed for an NFL cornerback and projects to start at the position for Cincinnati this season. If he remains healthy, Kirkpatrick has the potential to be a breakout player in 2013.
The team's first-round pick this season, Kirkpatrick fractured a bone in his knee just days before training camp started. When he returns to action, Kirkpatrick is a big, dynamic corner who should push Nate Clements to start opposite of Leon Hall.
