Alex Henery: Cut By Lions
KFree Agent
October 6, 2014
Henery was released by the Lions on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Henery missed all three of his field goal attempts Sunday, when Detroit lost at home in overtime. Given that egregious performance, his release Monday comes as little surprise.

First-year coach Chip Kelly had little trouble implementing his breakneck offense at the NFL level, as the Eagles finished sixth in scoring offense to boost Henery to 45 PATs, after he accumulated just 25 in 2012. At the same time, Kelly’s arrival was somewhat of a double-edged sword for Henery. Kelly’s inclination to pursue higher-scoring plays resulted in the kicker losing out on some extra points due to the Eagles’ league-leading eight two-point attempts, while Henery’s 28 tries from the field ranked 21st in the league. Henery didn’t endear himself to the coach by missing a 48-yarder in a two-point playoff loss to the Saints, and after a rough training camp, he ended up losing his kicking job to Cody Parkey in August.
Henery turned in another proficient performance in his sophomore year (87.1 percent), but the Eagles offense did him in by offering 20 fewer PATs and only four more field-goal attempts than in his rookie season. That should change in 2013 if new coach and offensive guru Chip Kelly is successful in implementing his spread attack that was so potent at Oregon. Kelly's aggressive nature might lead to eschewing field goals in 4th-and-short situations, but even so it would be surprising if Henery doesn't attempt more than the 27 field goals at which he took aim last year (15th in the league). The main drawback to Henery is his lack of range – only three career attempts from 50-plus with one make. If the Eagles offense comes alive, however, that won't matter.
Henery turned in a solid rookie campaign with 118 points but received few opportunities to showcase his ability from long distance, attempting only six field goals from 40 yards and beyond, two from 50-plus. The reduction in the 40-49 range from Philadelphia’s 2010 level helped limit Henery to just 27 field-goal attempts. He was undermined in part by an offense that produced the NFL’s second-highest turnover rate and a defense that ranked 20th in takeaways. The Eagles held steady on PATs vs. 2010, and if they provide a few more field-goal opportunities this year, it could boost Henery up the scoring ladder as he converted at an 88.9 percent clip last season.
The Eagles used a fourth-round pick on Henery, which paved the way for David Akers to sign with the 49ers this offseason. The Eagles offense consistently generates field-goal attempts – in fact the team has attempted an average of 37 tries per season, tops in the NFL over that span – and also has a high floor for extra points. Henery made 18-of-19 field-goal attempts at Nebraska last year, to set an NCAA career accuracy record of 89.5 percent (68-for-76), and hit all 54 of his extra points. He’s also got a strong leg, with a career-long of 57 yards. Only his lack of experience keeps him from ranking in the top-10.
