Yet to undergo ankle surgery
Brown (ankle) indicated Thursday he hasn't yet undergone surgery to address his injury, and he doesn't plan to do so unless a team signs him, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Brown's announcement on that front presents yet another barrier to any potential return to the playing field, as his recovery process won't even begin until a team agrees to sign him. It had previously been stated that Brown was scheduled to undergo ankle surgery shortly after having been cut by the Buccaneers back in January. When factoring both Brown's injury situation and the circumstances under which he parted ways with Tampa Bay, it seems possible the 33-year-old may not see another opportunity in the NFL, regardless of on-field ability. In seven games with Tampa Bay last season, Brown caught 42 of his 62 targets for 545 yards and four TDs.

Brown’s off-field antics cost him most of 2019, but after an eight-game suspension, he joined the Buccaneers and showed flashes of the skills that once made him the league’s best receiver. The last four weeks of the regular season, he put up a 33-25-315-4 line, numbers more or less in line with his prime seasons. He played through a knee injury in the playoffs and scored twice in three games, but wasn’t a major factor apart from the touchdowns. At 5-10, 185, Brown is small, but quick and explosive, and while he’s an erratic personality, there’s no question about his work ethic and dedication to his craft. At 33, he’s on the downside of his career, but given his time off, his lighter frame and knowledge of the game, he’s likely to age well. Brown re-signed with the Bucs this offseason, rejoining Tom Brady, but there are a lot of mouths to feed in that offense. He underwent knee surgery in May and is expected to be ready for training camp.

Furthers talk of retirement
Brown said he is not expecting to play in 2022 in an interview during a Fan Controlled Football game.
ANALYSIS
Brown was asked if he was planning to play in 2022, to which he replied, "Nah, don't play yourself looking at me to play." It's unclear if any team would have interest in signing Brown given his curious exit during the middle of a game in Week 17 while a member of the Buccaneers. On the other hand, he topped 100 receiving yards in three of the seven games he played during the 2021 campaign, so he still has the talent to upgrade a wide receiver depth chart.
