Rest-of-Season Projections
Released by Chicago
Royal (toe) was released by the Bears on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Royal's release has been anticipated for some time after it was reported in March that the team was waiting to release him until he could pass a physical. It's likely that he's nearly recovered from his December toe surgery, which is why he was finally let go. The veteran wideout will turn 31 later this month and likely still has enough in the tank to be a contributor for another club.

Royal is expected to enter the season as the Bears' starting slot receiver, as it’s unlikely that the team’s 2016 seventh-round draft choice, Daniel Braverman, will be able to overtake the veteran in his rookie year. In his first year with the team, Royal had an anemic 6.4 yards per reception in nine starts before missing time with a knee injury. His poor performance can easily be blamed on the fact that the offense was without Alshon Jeffery for four of its first five games of the year, allowing defenses to smother the Bears' passing offense. With Jeffery and Kevin White starting on the outside this year, Royal should see relatively light coverage as he operates in the middle of the field.
