ANALYSIS
Randle El spent nine years in the NFL as a receiver and returner for both the Steelers and the Redskins. Over his career, the receiver compiled 370 receptions for 4,467 yards and 15 touchdowns. Being a converted college quarterback, Randle El also threw the ball during trick plays, including a 43-yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward in Super Bowl XL. The receiver sat out the entire 2011 season after being cut by the Steelers, and according to his brother, will announce his retirement next week at his skills camp.

Randle El comes back to where his career began after four seasons with the Redskins. He'll fill in behind Hines Ward and Mike Wallace and has some competition behind him as well, so 50-plus receptions like he had the last three seasons is highly unlikely. Still, he will not be a forgotten man on Sundays since he will likely be involved in returns and gadget plays. While he will probably not have much value in the fantasy realm unless injuries hit the club, Randle El can help the team in multiple areas.
Randle El recorded 53 catches for 593 yards and a career high four touchdowns. He starts 2009 as the incumbent starting wide receiver even though his skill set matches a slot receiver. He will see competition from second year receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. Expect him to see less looks in 2009. He may also lose punt return responsibilities after another disappointing year returning kicks.
Had a career year in 2007, catching 51 passes for 728 yards and one touchdown. In 2008 he will compete with rookies Devin Thomas and Malcolm Floyd. Expect him to lose looks and to fall short of his 2007 numbers. He is also recovering from offseason knee surgery and will be ready for training camp.
Randle El caught 32 passes for 351 yards and three touchdowns in 2006. He signed a lucrative deal with the Redskins and did not provide the spark expected. Another year in Head Coach - Offense Al Saunders' system may help, but that is no guarantee. Randle El has never caught more than 47 passes in a season but has the assortment of skills (pass, catch and run) that could make him a versatile weapon. He will compete for the starting spot opposite Santana Moss.
Randle El will be competing with Brandon Lloyd for the starting wide receiver job opposite Santana Moss. However, he has been projected as the slot receiver. He has never caught more than 43 passes in a season. Expectations for 2006 should be anywhere from 40-60 receptions but anything more would be a stretch (unless he is able to beat out Lloyd). He is very versatile and expect Offensive Head Coach Al Saunders to exploit his throwing and running ability.
The Steelers will have to decide what they want to do with the versatile Randle El. It's nearly impossible for the team to expect him to play wide receiver and return punts on a full-time basis. The former college quarterback figures to have an expanded receiving role with the Steelers and could put up some big numbers at the wideout spot on an individual game-by-game basis. It's doubtful, however, that he'll consistently have back-to-back 100-yard receiving games, though.
Randle El was more reliable than Plaxico Burress last year, but Burress gets the benefit of the doubt as a premium former first-round draft pick. Randle El caught 66 percent of the passes thrown to him and showed the toughness over the middle (12 catches) that Burress (just four middle catches) lacks. Move him up if Burress’ contract pouting continues through the summer.
Randle El made an impressive debut for the Steelers last year catching 47 passes for 489 yards along with 970 combined yards returning kickoffs and punts. He makes for excellent insurance against any injury to the top 2 WRs in Steeltown.
