Dial announced Friday that he plans to retire from the NFL, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

ANALYSIS
Dial did not see NFL action in 2018 after serving as a rotational defensive tackle for the Packers a year prior. The 28-year-old spent his first four seasons in San Francisco, and he finishes with 145 tackles (90) and 4.5 sacks for his career.

Dial saw a decrease in production last season after posting career highs in tackles (59) and sacks (2.5) in 2015. Minor neck and elbow injuries were partially to blame, but he simply wasn't as disruptive when he was on the field. A switch to a 4-3 defense could open up space for the defensive tackle, but he will have to fend off the newly-signed Earl Mitchell during camp in order to maintain a starting role.

The 2013 fifth-round pick has been a steal for the 49ers. He has improved every season and his high motor earned him a starting job last season. He finished with a career-high 59 tackles and 2.5 sacks. With two young up-and-comers expected to start at the ends this season, Dial is the favorite to be the team's third starting lineman.

Never a highly-regarded prospect, Dial worked hard to earn a spot on the 49ers' 53-man roster last season. He filled in at several spots on the defensive line when injuries struck the team. His versatility and work ethic have him back in the mix to earn a spot on the roster yet again.

Fellow nose tackle Glenn Dorsey (biceps) will miss significant time, but Ian Williams (ankle) is back on the field effectively pushing Dial back into a backup role for the nose tackle position.

Dial will open camp on the sidelines in 2013 as he continues to recover from surgery to repair a torn ligament in his big toe. He is still expected to make the 53-man roster but will work as a back-up to starting nose-tackle Ian Williams.
