Rest-of-Season Projections
Heads toward free agency
Griffin wasn't targeted in the Bears' 29-13 loss to the Vikings in Week 18, and ended the season with four receptions for 26 yards over 15 games played.
ANALYSIS
Griffin came into this season with six seasons of at least 244 receiving yards, but the 32 year old had the worst season of his career because he was targeted less than once per game. It's possible he re-emerges next year as a depth tight end, as he's now an unrestricted free agent.

Despite landing the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Bears didn't use it, instead turning it into WR DJ Moore and other assets. QB Justin Fields now is positioned to take the next step in his development.
Carson Wentz is without Jahan Doston, but the Bears corners can't cover Terry McLaurin or Curtis Samuel.

Entering his 10th season in the league, the 32-year-old Griffin is expected to compete with James O'Shaughnessy as the backup tight end to Cole Kmet. During his career, Griffin has had periods of success, but he's only scored more than two touchdowns a single time, when he scored five times for the Jets in 2019. In addition, he topped 320 yards on just one occasion, when he recorded 442 yards with the Texans in 2016. If Kmet is forced to miss time, Griffin has a chance to see decent volume, but he'll likely only be an option in TE-premium leagues.

Could be cap casualty
Griffin's a candidate to be cut this offseason, according to Connor Hughes of the Athletic.
ANALYSIS
The Jets will almost certainly look to upgrade at tight end, and they will likely choose to move on from Griffin if they make some offseason additions at the position. Cutting him would save over $3 million, and the Jets would incur less than $200,00 in dead money. The 32-year-old tight end contributed just 261 yards and two touchdowns last season despite ample playing time.
