Jonathan Martin: Retires From NFL

Martin has elected to retire as an NFL player, the Charlotte Observer reports.

ANALYSIS
Per the report, Martin, who was claimed off waivers by the Panthers in March, has a back injury that could require surgery, which is presumably a key factor in his decision. Martin had been penciled in as the primary backup to left tackle Michael Oher, so the 25-year-old's retirement will represent a hit to the Panthers' offensive line depth.

Martin was involved in one of the more controversial off-the-field stories during the 2013 season. He is hoping to enter 2014 with a clean slate on his new team. The 49ers have been working Martin out at guard and tackle in order to have an insurance policy should any of their starters go down.

Martin will start at left tackle for the Dolphins. He will fill a position that used to be handled by perennial All-Pro Jake Long, so no pressure there. How he performs protecting Ryan Tannehill's blindside could go a long way toward determining how well the Miami offense will function.

The second round pick is slated to start the season at right tackle.
